The deep well of creativity that is Jazz opens my mind to new ideas every day. When Modal Jazz emerged in the late 1950s, it challenged the traditional ideas of Jazz by removing the established mechanisms of tonal music and pushed the boundaries of how music could create mood and movement. What I love about Modal Jazz is that, unlike tonal music, you can’t lean on chord changes and their color to create tension and release. Instead, you have to make use of scales, patterns, expression, intensity and pure musicianship to achieve that. The same elements that make tonal music great, but in modal jazz they’re essential. There’s so much to learn from that.
