This is exactly why that bench scene lands so hard—and why Gerwig was right to fight for it. Narratively, it doesn’t move the plot. Spiritually, it moves everything. That moment is the first time Barbie looks at a human being without comparison, without performance, without hierarchy. The elderly woman isn’t “useful,” aspirational, or symbolic in the usual cinematic way. She simply is. And Barbie’s line—“You’re beautiful”—isn’t flattery. It’s recognition. When people talk about Barbie carrying a “loving god’s gaze,” that’s what they mean. Barbie sees beauty as inherent, not earned. Not youth, productivity, or relevance—but existence itself. It’s a radical kind of seeing, especially in a world that constantly asks women to justify their worth. That’s also where the film quietly widens its scope. Barbie stops being just a character in a satirical comedy and becomes a vessel for memory. She’s no longer only played with—she’s connected to the generations who played with her. Girls who imagined futures. Women who grew older. Lives that didn’t turn out like the dream but mattered anyway. Without that scene, Barbie might still be clever. With it, the film becomes tender. It says: you don’t age out of beauty, you don’t age out of meaning, and you don’t have to be extraordinary to be worthy of being seen. No wonder Gerwig said it was the heart of the film. Cut it, and you lose the soul.

SOUL DAMAGE Yuji beating down Mahito is one of the most satisfying parts of JJK. Obviously not Gojo vs Sukuna levels of spectacle, but narratively very good. I often wish I was Yuji and the people using the equipment I need in the gym were Mahito. Very frustrating indeed.

This is me finishing my SECOND college essay curriculum (which has taken me 15 years, let’s be real, required a new team member from Stanford - hi, Bonnie 🙏🏼!, and somewhere around 485+ hours planning, drafting, and refining).
