Kindly requested by you guys and in the hopes of reaching more new and lovely people who will find @jawadcamp2 through this, I’ve turned the comic I made with Hadeel and the children in mind, into a video 🎬 ✏️ You can find (and talk to!) You can also read and check out their fundraiser there. ❤️⛺️ As you can see, they rely on d😮nat🤞ons to get by; to pay the teachers and keep the children in education, with toys to play with and food, water and community in their lives at this very difficult time. ⛺️ I’ve loved seeing the colouring pages emailed to them by artists all over the world recently too, which the children have been colouring in!! It’s been so good to see how art has a place in their lessons and community and I hope that it is as useful a tool for processing emotions for them, as it always has been for me 💛 Anyway, I hope you liked this and I hope that it can send a few more eyes their way. Feels like the final episode in this trilogy paying homage to fabric works - first crochet, then tapestry, and now textile. I really enjoyed learning about David Nott’s work, beautiful stuff. 6. Stop copying references. It trains you to redraw, not to actually draw. Yes, really. Use references only during study sessions, because a reference is for: - shape analysis - understanding construction - refining proportions & anatomy A reference is a source of knowledge - not something to copy from. Build your visual library first, and then create final works from intuition and feeling, based on the forms you’ve already studied. 5. Consistently build your visual library. What is it? A storage of images that you can draw more or less “from memory.” Your brain already knows the structure and can recreate a believable version. Everyone can draw a cat or a daisy from memory… But can everyone draw a gargoyle? Cthulhu? The rear deltoid of a javelin-throwing athlete? 😜 That’s artistic memory in action - academically called: visual memory, plastic reserve, form-thinking. 4. Don’t study everything. Study selectively. The strength of a visual library isn’t in its size - it’s in its quality and curation. Write down long lists of associations connected to your artistic narrative and intentionally study those images - ideally from life. If you haven’t defined your narrative yet, read my last 5–10 posts - everything you need to find it is there. 3. About drawing from life. Let’s be honest: most artists rely on Pinterest references instead of real life. It’s faster and easier…but there are 2 problems: Photos are already an interpretation - filtered by the camera, lighting, angles (or even by another artist’s eye). Life is raw space itself. When you copy a photo, you go from 2D to 2D - skipping the vital stage of translating 3D reality into 2D art. Drawing from life forces you to make real artistic decisions. Your brain learns spatial thinking - not flat copying. Only drawing from life: - builds true 3D form sense - trains the eye - develops constructive thinking This is academic fact. Photo references are fine for rare subjects, pose clarification, or detail studies- but they never replace drawing from life. A trained eye instantly sees the difference between artists who studied from life and those who only copied photos. See the pinned comment👇
