The last #ROVHercules dive of 2024 certainly was the #grandfinale of the season: our #CorpsofExploration witnessed four #Palaunautilus individuals (Nautilus belauensis) in #Palau’s #GermanChannel! These are the first sightings of #nautiloids — the most primitive #cephalopods — from #EVNautilus after 1000+ ROV dives over the last 15 years of operations. Palau, Micronesia. El nautilo emperador o Nautilus (Nautilus pompilius), como se le llama comúnmente, puede medir aproximadamente unos 30 centímetros de ancho. El crustáceo forma cámaras (hasta 30 en edad adulta) para vivir dentro de la concha, generalmente ocupa la cámara más externa. La concha puede ser blanca con bandas rojas. En el exterior solo se observan hasta 90 brazos o tentáculos (cirros sin ventosas). Sus conchas aparecen en fósiles encontrados, con la misma estructura (tamaño y forma) que las especies vivas. Según la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza, se encuentra en estado vulnerable, pero por datos insuficientes, ya que su hábitat se encuentra a más de 700 metros de profundidad. Son capturados de forma ilegal para vender las conchas como souvenir. Se piensa que sus poblaciones han caído hasta 80 por ciento, por lo que algunos investigadores sugieren que debería ser considerada una especie en peligro crítico de extinción. Tú puede ayudar. This “Squid with a shell" the Palau Nautilus caught on film by @enricsala and @manusanfelix. This cephalopod (a cousin of octopus and squid) lives mainly in Palau and the Western Carolines on reef slopes typically between 150-300 meters deep, but can sometimes be seen at shallower depths like this when they make excursions at night when fish activity diminishes.

A type of mollusc, nautilus are different from their distant cousins of squid, octopi and cuttlefish, by keeping their soft body encased inside a hard external shell.
