✨ Meet one of Palau’s most extraordinary ocean treasures: the Palau nautilus (Nautilus belauensis). These ancient mariners—often called “living fossils”—have survived in our oceans for more than 500 million years. But what makes them truly special? 🌊🐚 👉 They’re endemic to Palau, meaning they’re found nowhere else on Earth. 👉 Their beautifully spiralled shells help them float and dive using chambers filled with gas and liquid. 👉 At night, they rise from the deep to feed, then return to the twilight depths by day. Palau’s nautilus is a reminder of just how unique our reefs and surrounding waters are. Protecting them means protecting a species that carries the history of the ocean in its shell. 💙 📍 Have you ever seen a nautilus shell up close? #Palau #AquariumLife #MarineScience #Nautilus #EndemicSpecies #OceanWonder #MarineScience

We’re continuing the love this #biodiversitymonth by sharing our favourites, like the #Nautilus. A type of mollusc, nautilus are different from their distant cousins of squid, octopi and cuttlefish, by keeping their soft body encased inside a hard external shell. These 'living fossils,' are admired for their beauty and swimming abilities. They swim using jet propulsion and their depth is regulated by altering the amount of gas and water in the shell chambers. #greatbarrierreef #underwaterwildlife #uniquespecies #vulnerablespecies #uniteforthereef

🦑 What you see in this video is called a Palau Nautilus or also known as “Squid with a shell." This cephalopod (a cousin of octopus and squid) lives mainly in Palau and the Western Carolines on reef slopes typically between 150-300 meters deep, but can sometimes be seen at shallower depths like this when they make excursions at night when fish activity diminishes. At the immature/juvenile stage the Palau nautilus’ shell is covered in colored bands. Its body chamber is covered by a thick, gelatinous, and slippery periostracum. As it reaches the sub mature stage, most of its body chamber is white but with thin margins. However, it still lacks a black layer that develops upon maturity. _____ 🧬 Maturity in the Palau nautilus is reached when there is a rapid decrease in growth rate until there is no additional growth. The body chamber shell wall thickens with deposition of a black layer along the apertural margin and the accentuation of the hyponomic and ocular sinuses. The exterior body chamber lacks color banding. The last septum is thickened but has a reduced volume in the final chamber. There are usually around 35 septa in the shell. The maximum observed range in shell sizes extends from 180mm to 239mm in diameter with the umbilical diameter taking up 16% of the shell diameter. The Palau nautilus can live for 5-10 years after reaching maturity and have a life span that may range beyond 20 years. _____ 🎥 courtesy of: @manusanfelix & @enricsala 🚨 Did you know that half of Americans read less than 4 books per year? 🧐 You probably read more Instagram captions in a day than many people read all year! 🤯 Here’s your chance to meet in the middle with @nerdsnacks.io, the official newsletter of @science. 🎉 Subscribe today! 📲 LINK IN BIO. #science #squid #whale #shark #fish #whales #orcas #dolphin #turtle #octopus #ocean #sea #oceanlife #sealife #cephalopod #palaunautilus

Nautiluses are ancient creatures, dating back over 500 million years. They use jet propulsion for movement and have a unique chambered shell, with gas-filled compartments to control buoyancy. Despite their longevity, nautilus populations are declining due to overfishing and habitat destruction. #nautilus #chamberednautilus #sea #sealife #seaanimals #facts

The last #ROVHercules dive of 2024 certainly was the #grandfinale of the season: our #CorpsofExploration witnessed four #Palaunautilus individuals (Nautilus belauensis) in #Palau’s #GermanChannel! These are the first sightings of #nautiloids — the most primitive #cephalopods — from #EVNautilus after 1000+ ROV dives over the last 15 years of operations. Meet the Chambered Nautilus🌀 This is definitely one of my favourite species featured in my new Cephalopods print 🤩 A true ancient mariner, the nautilus has been navigating our oceans for over 500 million years - long before dinosaurs ever existed - earning its nickname as a “living fossil.” Its iconic spiral shell has remained nearly unchanged throughout its entire evolutionary history. But this shell isn’t just beautiful… it’s genius! Inside are dozens of chambers that the nautilus fills with gas or liquid to regulate its buoyancy, allowing it to rise and sink through the water column with incredible precision. When threatened, it can retreat fully inside and seal itself in with a fleshy hood - nature’s original dive capsule. And yet, despite surviving mass extinctions, volcanic eruptions, and dramatic planetary shifts… the nautilus is now at risk because of us. Slow-growing, late-maturing, and producing very few offspring, their populations cannot withstand the intense pressure of overfishing for the shell trade. Their beautifully patterned shells - once tools for survival - are now sold as souvenirs. Between 2005 – 2008, more than half a million nautilus pieces were imported into the USA alone… It’s heartbreaking to think that a species which has endured for half a billion years could disappear within our lifetime. By learning, sharing, and refusing to view their shells as commodities, we can help shift this trajectory. 🔍 Fun fact: The nautilus is the only cephalopod with an external shell - and just like whale sharks and manta rays, each individual can be identified by its unique stripe pattern, like a fingerprint. ✨ Prints are available on my website! 🌍 Worldwide shipping #natureisart #nautilus #cephalopod #cephalopods #oceanmagic #watercolour #scientificillustration #illustration #paintwhatyoulove #protectwhatyoulove #oceanart #oceanartist #oceaninspired #wildlifeartist #endangeredspecies #savethesea
