What I mean👇 Now of course humans don’t ruin absolutely everything, but in the case of the sperm wake that was killed by someone’s fishing nets, it’s a yes. Approx 100 000 marine animals we killed each year from human impacts (such as plastic, boats, etc) and an extra 2.8 TRILLION are killed with the intention of being eaten. Absolutely insane how high those numbers are, right? But not to worry, that are lots of things we as individuals can do to help our precious ocean ecosystems: 🪸 Reduce single use plastic usage 🪸 Eat less seafood (more direct impact) 🪸 Pick up trash when you see it! The Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument was created in 2016 to protect nearly 5,000 square miles of ocean about 130 miles southeast of Cape Cod a biodiversity hotspot of deep-sea canyons, underwater mountains, whales, dolphins, sea turtles, and ancient coral ecosystems. On February 6, 2026, the Trump administration lifted the ban on commercial fishing within the monument. Scientists and conservation groups warn this could cause irreversible damage to some of the ocean’s most fragile habitats. But this isn’t just about policy, it’s about us. Our overconsumption fuels the industries threatening these waters. Cutting out unsustainable seafood, fish oil, and krill-based products matters. So does supporting ecotourism that benefits local communities, and simply raising awareness. Educate yourself, watch Seaspiracy. And vote for leaders who prioritize the well-being of people and the planet over temporary profit. The ocean doesn’t have a voice. We do.🌊

This is HUGE! A historic global agreement to protect the world’s ocean and reverse damage to marine life is officially becoming international law! It’s called the Global Ocean Treaty, or the High Seas Treaty, and it finally gives us a way to create Marine Protected Areas in international waters. Think of these like national parks, but in the ocean, that block harmful activity like industrial fishing and allow marine life to recover. Right now only 1% of international waters are protected, but the treaty provides a roadmap to protect 30% of our ocean by 2030! It officially kicks in this January, now that 60 countries have signed it into law, and that number’s already jumped to 75! This wouldn’t have happened without decades of campaigning from people just like you. And this is a big win, but it’s just the start. We now need world leaders to act quickly and boldly to create a vast network of ocean sanctuaries, to help the ocean not only recover, but thrive, and ensure future generations can enjoy the ocean and its benefits for years to come. We got SOAKED from breaching Orcas today🤯 One of the absolute best encounters we’ve ever had. We spotted this pod as they met up with another group and fed on Sea Lion’s together. They began celebrating as they do with full bellies and danced around us for several minutes as we sat in neutral watching in amazement. Here is the truth: we’ve already lost 50% of the world’s kelp forests, and in places like Northern California it’s closer to 95%. Acidification has jumped 30% since the Industrial Revolution, dissolving the shells of the organisms that build the base of the food chain. Add in runaway overfishing, disappearing predators, and warming water that’s breaking temperature records every year, and you start to see the truth: the ocean is not resilient to infinite abuse. It’s running out of buffer. And it’s not just “plastic straws.” Every single year, 8–12 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean, plus fertilizer runoff that creates hundreds of dead zones where nothing can survive. We’ve wiped out 90% of large predatory fish, supercharged urchin barrens, and turned entire coastlines into climate-driven graveyards. People like to argue, deny, or minimize it, but the data is brutal: we are cooking, acidifying, and suffocating the ocean that makes life on Earth possible.
