What Was This Shark Thinking? Video courtesy of @calypsostarcharters.videos Follow @creatures_of_the_deep_ for more! Remember to keep your hands inside the ride! Without hands, sharks are limited in the number of ways they can investigate their environment. They will use their teeth and give investigatory nibbles to test things out, seeing if they are edible! Even though a Shark will go through tens of thousands of teeth in their life, each tooth has pressure and position sensitive nerves, allowing the Shark to gain a huge amount of information on what they’re biting. In the ocean, where there is a 3D environment allowing for all manner of encounters, this info is massive in helping these apex predators survive and thrive! . . . . . #sharktooth #sharkteeth #greatwhite #wildlife #sharksofinstagram #sharkaddicts #ocean #sharklove #sharklover #ilovesharks

DEEP Sea Spiders Our team are still in Antarctica, and the footage from our #deepsea baited landers is nothing short of incredible. Not actually related to spiders, sea spiders belong to the class called Pycnogonida. These marine arthropods exhibit unique adaptations to the extreme cold, high-pressure environments of the deep Southern Ocean. Notable observations include their disproportionally long legs relative to body size, a feature that aids in locomotion across soft sediment and maximizes surface area for gas exchange. Sea spiders play a role in benthic ecosystems as predators and scavengers, feeding on cnidarians, sponges, and soft-bodied invertebrates. This new data will help us understand their distribution patterns and how they may be responding to shifting ocean conditions. #AntarcticDeepSea #Pycnogonida #DeepSeaResearch #MarineBiology #BenthicEcology #PolarScience #Antarctica2025 #DeepSeaExploration @kelpiegeo @universitywa

As the massive carcass sinks, it becomes a banquet for deep-sea creatures. Microbes kickstart the process by breaking down the whale’s organic matter, producing essential nutrients. Scavengers like hagfish and sleeper sharks arrive to feed on the whale’s flesh, while bone-eating worms, known as Osedax, play a crucial role by extracting nutrients from the bones. This process creates a complex web of life in the deep sea, attracting various invertebrates, crustaceans, and predators. Whalefalls serve as vibrant hubs of biodiversity, showcasing the ocean’s ability to recycle and thrive in the most unexpected places, shaping the ecosystems of the deep abyss Video by @deepbluesea via @nautiluslive #whalefall #deepsea #deepocean #ocean #oceanlove #whale #whales #oceanconservation #océan #sea #underwater #marinebiology

Blacktip reef shark vs sting ray predation!!!‼️ This juvenile stingray was hunted by blacktip reef sharks this morning. The sharks individually made several attempts at the ray and the ray always escaped. Once the sharks went in together, the ray didn’t stand a chance. You can see the sharks are ambushing the ray, trapping it between the deeper water and the beach giving it nowhere to go! The sharks risk beaching themselves to make their kill. Crazy start to my day watching this!! Unfortunately for this ray, all ecosystems need apex predators & these sharks demonstrated exactly why that’s them! #SharkHunt #PredationEvent #Sharks #Shark #ApexPredators #Predators #Maldives #Nature #SharkWeek #Ray #StingRay #Animals #Fish #Ocean #MarineScience #ThisIsLiving #MarineConservation #WildlifeConservation #Wildlife

Crabs grow through a process called molting because their hard outer shells, called exoskeletons, can’t stretch or expand. Instead of growing with the crab, the shell stays the same size, so the crab has to shed it and build an entirely new body! Crabs begin the process of molting through the absorption of a large amount of water, which helps swell their bodies and crack the old shell open. The crab will then slowly pull itself out of the old shell, starting with its legs and claws and ending with its soft, unprotected body. The molting process can take several hours and leaves the crab very vulnerable. When a crab emerges from its old shell, the new shell underneath is soft and flexible, so the crab hides in a safe place to avoid predators. Over the next few days, the new shell will harden and become stronger and larger than before, giving the crab more space to grow until the next time it molts. The process of molting will happen many times throughout a crab’s life, especially when the crab is young and growing quickly before slowing down with age. #nudibranch #crab #biology #ocean #education #learning #swag #bruh #meme

Turning your back, splashing, & swimming away from a shark will trigger their natural response as a predator to chase & follow. If you run into a shark you want to face them & stay calm. Mahalo @andriana_marine for demonstrating this here! We hear more about what to do if we see a bear or other top predators on land but I don’t think booping the snoot of a bear is going to do as much for you. 😅 Isn’t it amazing that sharks can be swam with safely so easily? (Of course always go with a trained professional) We aim to show their beauty & that they aren’t man eating monsters, which I believe these videos accomplish! People always DM me & ask, “why aren’t they attacking you?” Which shows me we still have a long way to go & many people to convince… but we are up for the challenge. Mahalo @hawaiiadventurediving for the unforgettable experience! If you’re on Oahu check them out! #sharksafety #tigershark #sharkdiving #sharkdiver #sharkdive #ocean #hawaii #oahu

Discover the mesmerizing defense mechanism of sea cucumbers. These fascinating creatures have a unique trick up their sleeves – or should we say, their bodies. When threatened, sea cucumbers release their cuvierian organs, which then undergo a truly astonishing transformation. Like a scene from a science fiction movie, these organs turn into sticky spaghetti-like structures upon contact with seawater. This incredible defense mechanism effectively immobilizes potential predators, leaving them in awe and the sea cucumber unharmed 🤓 ⠀ If you see anything else it’s Pareidolia ⠀ follow @creatures 🌌❤️ #creatures #seacreatures #seacucumber #ocean #animals #fish #reels #explorepage ⠀

Bye Bye Birdie • 📽 by @venturingkessler Great white takes out an unsuspecting giant petrel. Its just a fact that seabirds rely heavily on ocean predators for sustenance. For instance, when a school of fish is being hunted from below, the school is forced into a tight ball, naturally finding its way to the surface. That's where the birds feast on the frightened mass of flailing flesh. Anecdotally, this looks to be a two-way street. #natureismetal #keepnaturemetal - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hit the link in our bio and SAVE 30% OFF EVERYTHING IN OUR STORE!
