The world’s first opalized flower is about to exist and I literally can’t believe it. This step has been crucial in creating opalized specimens. I’ve tried a lot of methods to control where the opal wants to settle and form. It tends to run down the edges of the jar so I thought what if I gave it something to run down in the middle of the jar and ALSO directed straight toward the thing I’m trying to opalize!? I set up 4 different samples to test and every single one had similar results. The opal solution aggregated and started to glob and run down the glass stir rod directly onto the object I’m trying to opalize. The world’s first opalized flower is about to exist. All I do now is wait and hope the flower structure doesn’t interfere with the opal formation.

Nevada is THE place to hunt for opals in the US, so I teamed up with @travelnevada to check out Royal Peacock Opal Mines and give some geologic insight into the experience #ad - Digging through this Miocene-age volcanic rock really sets the scene for a time where violent eruptions engulfed entire forests in ash. But this destruction in the past wound up creating something beautiful for us in the present… the opals! The variety of colors and grades you can find here was a pleasant surprise—it was really cool to see an amber-colored one and a white one with that signature opalescence! Not to mention all that semi-opalized wood, which I’m so glad made it home in one piece! 😅 - My visit to Royal Peacock Opal Mine was more than a rockhounding expedition, it was a learning experience from the delightful people who run it. Julie Wilson’s family has owned and operated the nearly 100-year-old mine for generations, and it was so lovely to hear about its modern history alongside its geologic history. These guys know their stuff and truly have a passion for opals, and sharing them with others! Re-visiting some old finds…A beautiful fossilized trilobite from the high desert of the Great Basin. This marine arthropod now sits frozen in rock in the arid high altitudes of Utah. But these rocks were deposited from huge ocean ecosystems that existed of 500 million years ago.
