I let this go too longโฆ๐ฌ Life got in the way, but Iโm getting back in the swing of things! Time to prune off all those water suckers on my orange tree. You want the bottom 1/3 of your tree to be clear of any branches and suckers. This is what makes the difference between a ๐๐๐๐ and a ๐๐๐๐. Removing bottom branches creates more airflow, allows more light and reduces chances of disease. It also puts energy back in the branches that are actually producing fruit. How to prune your Orange Tree to harvest lots of homegrown Oranges ๐โ๏ธ If your orange tree grows lots of leaves but very few fruits, the issue is often excessive vertical growth. Citrus trees naturally produce strong upright shoots that consume energy without producing flowers or fruit. These vertical shoots, often called vigorous shoots or water shoots, redirect nutrients toward growth instead of fruit production. Here is a simple pruning and training technique that can help restore productivity. Start by identifying tall upright branches at the top of the canopy. Cut these branches back by about one third to reduce excessive vertical growth. Next, gently bend some of the remaining branches and secure them with twine attached to a stake in the ground. Training branches to grow more horizontally changes the treeโs energy distribution. Horizontal branches receive better sunlight, improve airflow inside the canopy, and are much more likely to produce buds, flowers, and eventually fruit. Opening up the tree also allows sunlight to penetrate deeper into the canopy, helping fruit ripen more evenly and improving the overall health of the tree. Pruning and branch training are simple but powerful techniques to encourage citrus trees like oranges, lemons, and mandarins to become more productive. Green Love to you ๐๐๐

Pruning this orange tree for the first time. Itโs probably about 3 years old, and Iโm wondering when it will start producing oranges. ๐

๐Set up your citrus for a bountiful year by giving them some TLC in late winter. February is the perfect time to give a little attention to your citrus trees anf they will thank you with a fruitful future! โ๏ธ Encourages Strong Spring Growth โ Late-winter pruning removes dead or crowded branches, allowing sunlight and air circulation to reach new growth just in time for the seasonโs first push. ๐ฑ Boosts Nutrient Absorption โ Post-rain, citrus trees are primed to take in nutrients. Applying a balanced organic citrus fertilizer now supports flowering and fruit development. ๐ฆ Keeps Pests & Disease in Check โ Moist conditions can invite fungal issues and pests like aphids and scale. A gentle horticultural oil spray helps prevent infestations before they start. ๐ Prepares for a Long Fruiting Season โ With the right care now, your citrus will stay healthy, resilient, and ready to produce an abundance of fruit in your garden. Prune this espaliered Meyer Lemon tree with me. ๐ ๐ณ Every spring, I prune the test gardenโs citrus trees. Pruning citrus is not a requirement like with apples or peaches, but we do like to clean them up because it not only makes the trees look nicer, it also helps reduce pests and diseases as well as promotes new growth and more fruit. Here are the steps I take when Iโm pruning a citrus tree. Always use clean tools. โ๏ธ First, I remove the ripe fruit. Next, I prune away the โ4 Dโsโ: Damaged, dead, diseased, and disoriented branches, which grow downward, cross other branches or grow towards the center of the tree. (Iโve heard some call it deranged instead of disoriented but it means the same thing) Lastly, I prune for shape and fullness. I trim the branches at the bud node where I would like it to sprout new growth. I look to create a balanced shape. The bud node is the bump between the leaf and the stem. Cut about 1/4โ above that spot and new shoots will grow there. You will probably only remove a few branches. Do not prune more than a third of the tree in a season. #pruningtips #citrustrees #growingtips #Zone8 #zone9 #zone10 #meyerlemontree #fourwindsgrowers

How to NOT kill your citrus trees. And actually get some fruit from them. The most common mistake beginner gardeners can make when growing fruit trees is letting the root stock escape. This will mean you wonโt end up with whatever fruit youโre trying to grow and will end up producing some completely different fruit. Hereโs how you prune your trees to avoid that happening

You can graft citrus trees of any kindย ๐๐๐ย @5.min.green โ โ โ #5mc #5mingreen #lemontree #orangetree #howto #treegrafting #fruittreegrafting #gardeningskills #gardeningtips #citrustrees

If your tree isnโt thriving, check to see if it has โsuckersโ coming out of the root stock. This tree was planted in ground a few years ago, but has always been on the struggle bus for our client. In an attempt to rehabilitate it, we dug it up and potted it in premium citrus soil. Also, we noticed this particular lime tree had four thick sucker branches coming out of the rootstock. For those new rootstock, most commercial trees are grafted onto a robust rootstock. Rootstock typically refers the bottom trunk portion with establish roots that serve as a jumpstart base for a grafted variety. Rootstocks are typically more disease resistant and are vigorous growers, however the fruit is not as desirable hence grafting on a tasty variety. Every tree has a fixed amount of energy it can produce, so if there are undesirable branches, it is consuming energy that would otherwise go to flower/fruiting and branches that you do want to keep. So, hereโs your sign to go check your tree at the graft union, and cut any branches that are growing from BELOW or AT the graft union. If youโre new around here, welcome! This is a Valencia Orange tree ๐I bought it from a local nursery last year. I accidentally didnโt cover it over the winter storm, but it actually came back with fresh new leaves and even a bloom on it for the spring! ๐ I just trimmed down the branches and added some water and fertilizer to it! I hate to break it to you, but if youโre not pruning your fruit trees right now, your harvest is going to suffer. Shaping, thinning, heading, and removing dead wood directly affect airflow, light, and fruit production. Dormant season pruning sets the tone for the entire year. #fruittrees #pruningtips #floridagardening #homeorchard
