Fix This Common Overhead Squat Mistake

Overhead squats dema

Fix This Common Overhead Squat Mistake Overhead squats demand strength, mobility, and precision—especially in your shoulder positioning. Let’s break it down: 🔑 The Proper Setup: The barbell should sit slightly behind your head, in a straight line with your shoulders, hips, and heels. Your torso stays upright, and your knees drive outward to maintain balance and stability. Most importantly, your shoulders must be externally rotated, creating a strong, stable position to support the barbell. 🚫 The Common Mistake: If your shoulders lack external rotation or your mobility is limited, the barbell may drift too far behind or forward. This not only makes the lift harder but also forces you to rely on sheer luck to keep the bar overhead. Poor positioning can cause your torso to tip forward, leading to inefficient reps and an increased risk of injury. 💡 The Fix: Train your shoulder mobility and actively focus on external rotation during your lifts. Visualize “screwing” your shoulders into a secure and locked position. Pair this with proper knee tracking and an upright torso to ensure smooth, powerful reps every time. Overhead squats test your limits, but mastering this position will unlock strength, stability, and confidence. 💬 Share it with someone working on their OHS! #CrossFit #OverheadSquats

✅ Overhead squats 1️⃣Definitely one of the most challenging movement with a barbell. Mostly because it's very unusual and has a great mobility demand. 🔹(Check my snatch mobility YOUTUBE video YiuTube : jeanpauldk 2️⃣But usually, people are starting too heavy too soon. From a stick that weighs almost nothing to 20kg empty barbell, it can be a huge step and it will definitely help to take the lightest barbell as a set in between. If the lightest barbell is still too heavy, try adding plate in the stick to start even lighter. Find the weight that fits your level.

Let’s hit a heavy 3 for the day! Overhead squats are one of my favorite movements, so I was excited to test this one! 15 minutes is not a long window to find a heavy weight, so I knew I needed a plan to use my time efficiently. I took relatively large jumps, hitting more reps (5-6) at lighter weight to lock in good technique and just 1-2 reps at bars 3 and 4. This is not the heaviest 3 OHS that I’ve ever hit, but I achieved my goal of maintaining good form at a challenging weight and hitting full depth on every rep. Here ⬇️ 👇 If you can’t do a proper overhead squat... ‼️ My opinion is you shouldn’t even be doing squat snatches, because it doesn’t make sense. ❌ It would be like trying to do butterfly pull ups before you even have the kipping pull up (oh wait... you know who you are🤦). 🙏 Positioning first, then you can dive into the complex lifts. 🫵 Don’t be stubborn. 🔹So If you enjoyed this post and enjoy functional training as much as I do, I think you’ll like my page. ✍️ “The overhead squat is the ultimate core exercise and peerless in developing effective athletic movement. This functional gem trains for efficient transfer of energy from large to small body parts and improves functional flexibility. Similarly, it develops the squat by amplifying and cruelly punishing faults in posture, movement, and stability. The overhead squat is to midline control, stability and balance what the clean and snatch are to power—unsurpassed.” Greg Glassman All of these benefits are earned to some degree whether we’re overhead squatting with a PVC pipe, a light barbell or a heavy load. The important thing is to overhead squat regularly. Overhead squats keep you young! 🏋️‍♀️: @alizou2b 🇫🇷 #CrossFitEducation #CrossFit

Struggling holding the bar overhead in the Overhead Squat?

Struggling holding the bar overhead in the Overhead Squat? The position of your arms and shoulder blades is key for allowing your upper body to comfortably sit deep into the squat and holding the bar over your upper back 🏋🏻‍♂️ The set up: - Squeeze shoulder blades into the middle of the back as if you’re holding a pound coin between them - Elbow pits face approx 45 degrees forward and up (stronger lockout at the elbow) - Wrists bent back slightly with the bar in the palm of the hand NOT the knuckles Tag a mate who struggles with the Overhead Position in the OHS 👊🏼

Age 37 close grip overhead squat 100 kg / 220 lbs with tempo 10” descent and 10” pause - still chasing excellence every time I touch the barbell. . Strength is useless without control. Whether you’re just starting in the gym or you’re a seasoned master - one of the best ways to keep your body healthy & continue making progress in the gym is to enhance proper technique. By taking a lift and adding in a very slow tempo descent AND a long pause in the bottom position you expose any weak links in control. Any instability exposed can instantly kill the lift. . Mobility: if you don’t use it - you lose it. And a key factor most miss when it comes to mobility training is adding load. Doing so allows you to build control THROUGH those extreme ranges - enhancing mobility versus just flexibility that comes with stretching. Drills like this tempo closed grip overhead squat is something that really drives this idea - big thanks to @olychad for programming them into my training routines. . Shoes & clothing by @tyrsport
