PDA autism is defined as pathalogical demand avoidance or persistent drive for autonomy. It might look like defiance from an outide perspective but there is so much more happening. This is how I explain PDA autism to people in my life so they can better understand me and support me💗 #autism #autismawarness #pdaautism

Here’s what you’re looking at: a real-life autism PDA moment where we go from window-down chaos to calm conversation in just a 6 minute #autism #pda #pathalogicaldemandavoidance #cognitive #redirection

Demands are all around us, and can be incredibly difficult for someone who is PDA. so here are 5 more hidden demands that you might not realise are demands #pda #pathologicaldemandavoidance #autism

Pathological Demand Avoidance••• Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is very often associated with autism for many people. I definitely struggle with PDA and it is hard to think of why my brain experiences this extreme aversion to anything perceived as a demand. In this video I go over some reasons I have come up with. I would love to hear of any reasons you think of too! It is important to be aware of the reasonings behind PDA because so often people and especially children are labeled as defiant when in reality they are struggling and experiencing extreme anxiety and stress over perceived demands. Autism PDA is not about being difficult. It is about survival. For my daughter, going back to Burger King was not spoiling her. It was restoring safety to her nervous system. PDA kids live in a constant fight-or-flight state, and rituals like this bring them back to calm. Co-regulation is what every autistic child deserves. Many autistic adults never had this support and are still healing from the absence of it. That is why I share these moments to build a culture of understanding, regulation, and compassion.

If you're wondering about early signs of PDA autism (Pathological Demand Avoidance also know as Pervasive Drive forAutonomy ) in babies or toddlers, here are some behaviours I noticed with my own child. You might relate, or spot things you hadn't maybe considered before. Other signs you might notice include intense need for control, difficulty with transitions, and anxiety around demands. Every child is unique, so not all signs will be present, but trust your instincts. Have you noticed similar behaviours in your little one? Share your experiences below. PDA doesn’t always look like “bad behaviour” - especially in boys. It often shows up as anxiety, avoidance, humour, control, or emotional explosions when demands feel overwhelming. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone - and your child isn’t doing this on purpose. #pdaprofile #neurodivergentkids #askellie #autismawareness #SENDParenting

When your PDA child says their legs don’t work... it’s not defiance, it’s distress. This morning, my son couldn’t walk. Not because of injury, but because his nervous system was in shutdown. His body literally couldn’t cope with the demand. That’s the thing with Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) (or pervasive drive for autonomy) the demands don’t need to be loud or unreasonable. Even “getting dressed” can trigger a nervous system response that looks like refusal, pain or aggression. So, we slowed down. ✅ I used declarative language ✅ I paraphrased and clarified ✅ I gave choices and used natural consequences ✅ I supported his autonomy and lowered all demands By the end, he was calm, rational, asking questions; back in his thinking brain. This is co-regulation in action and it changes everything - even in the messy moments. 🧠 If you’ve ever been blamed for “giving in,” just know: This is what neurodivergent parenting really looks like. Heads up- exciting news: my course, 'The Calm Parent Pathway' is now LIVE - a self paced course for overwhelmed parents to help you regulate, co-regulate and advocate without burning out. 💬 Share if this resonates. 💛 Comment PDA SUPPORT and I’ll DM you the link #PDAParenting #PathologicalDemandAvoidance #NeurodivergentParenting #PDAAwareness #NDParentSupport #ParentingPDA #LowDemandParenting #PDAChildren #CoRegulationMatters #NervousSystemParenting #MeltdownSupport #NeurodivergentKids #AutismParenting #DemandAvoidance #ParentingStrategies
