PDA autism is defined as pathalogical demand avoidance or persistent drive for autonomy. It might look like defiance from an outide perspective but there is so much more happening. This is how I explain PDA autism to people in my life so they can better understand me and support me💗 #autism #autismawarness #pdaautism

Why Level 1 PDA autism is so often missed — especially in social, emotionally aware kids. #autismacceptance #autismawarness #pdaautism #pathologicaldemandavoidance #highfunctioningautism

Here’s what you’re looking at: a real-life autism PDA moment where we go from window-down chaos to calm conversation in just a 6 minute #autism #pda #pathalogicaldemandavoidance #cognitive #redirection

If you're wondering about early signs of PDA autism (Pathological Demand Avoidance also know as Pervasive Drive forAutonomy ) in babies or toddlers, here are some behaviours I noticed with my own child. You might relate, or spot things you hadn't maybe considered before. Other signs you might notice include intense need for control, difficulty with transitions, and anxiety around demands. Every child is unique, so not all signs will be present, but trust your instincts. Have you noticed similar behaviours in your little one? Share your experiences below. One could argue that parenting a child with Pathological Demand Avoidance is harder… PDA is recognized as one of 5 types of autism spectrum in the UK, and by very knowledgeable therapists in the US. It is not yet in the DSM. It can be so extreme that it takes on the negative traits of schizophrenia (not the positive traits which are delusions and hallucinations). How to talk with someone with PDA: Be respectful: Avoid using words like "need", "now", "must", and "urgently". Be calm: Don't take it personally. Be flexible: Be ready to scale back demands or change your approach if the person starts to panic. Be indirect: Find ways to "ask without asking". For example, instead of saying "You need to get dressed now", you could say "The clothes are on the bed, I'm happy to help" and then walk away. Use declarative language: Use statements, comments, or observations. Rephrase: Try talking about an object rather than a person. Start requests with "please": This can make a big difference. Make the person feel useful: Use words like "us", "we", "let's", and "together". Show appreciation: Thank the person for doing something difficult or helpful. Give indirect praise: Some people with PDA crave positive attention and recognition, but don't like receiving compliments or praise. Thanks #neurodivergent_minds - “PDA is so hard It gets confused for anxiety or bad behavior but this is a real thing. What can happen is when there’s demands (rules, instructions, social rules, expectations) this can cause a number of things including sensory overload. The nervous system gets into a flight, fight, or freeze state. PDA has levels to it. On one end it can be distractions all the way to aggression or complete shut down.” #mentalhealthawareness #neurodivergence #audhd #adhd #neuroaffirming #mentalhealth #parenting #therapistsofinstagram

Pathological Demand Avoidance••• Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is very often associated with autism for many people. I definitely struggle with PDA and it is hard to think of why my brain experiences this extreme aversion to anything perceived as a demand. In this video I go over some reasons I have come up with. I would love to hear of any reasons you think of too! It is important to be aware of the reasonings behind PDA because so often people and especially children are labeled as defiant when in reality they are struggling and experiencing extreme anxiety and stress over perceived demands. Autistics with a PDA profile are often misunderstood and vilified. #actuallyautistic #autistic #adhd #professorsol #pda

PDA is NOT just autism. And pretending it is? That’s exactly why these kids are being failed. They’re not defiant. They’re not manipulative. They’re overwhelmed and we’re responding completely wrong. PDA has a clear, predictable pattern when you actually understand it. So why are we still forcing these children into strategies that make things worse? Lack of recognition isn’t neutral. It’s harmful. Because misdiagnosis = wrong support. And wrong support = real damage. Share this to push for education, awareness, and real recognition. #PDA #PathologicalDemandAvoidance #Neurodiversity #PDAPerspective #raiseawareness

Autism PDA is not about being difficult. It is about survival. For my daughter, going back to Burger King was not spoiling her. It was restoring safety to her nervous system. PDA kids live in a constant fight-or-flight state, and rituals like this bring them back to calm. Co-regulation is what every autistic child deserves. Many autistic adults never had this support and are still healing from the absence of it. That is why I share these moments to build a culture of understanding, regulation, and compassion.

Parents often miss this early play pattern. 📝For a quick and simple way to check your child for possible autism signs, go to my ♥️YouTube channel (link in bio), watch the full video, and download the checklist. 🧸Not all children play in the same way. And noticing certain play patterns can sometimes help parents recognize early warning signs and decide when it might be worth speaking with a specialist. In this reel I show three different play patterns using the same toys: 👶🏼Typical child: Focused on play and using toys in the typical way — according to their intended purpose. 🙇🏼♀️Child with autism: Focused on play, but interacting with toys in a different way — often sorting or lining things up, organizing objects, or focusing intensely on specific details of a toy and repeating the same action many times (for example spinning a car wheel instead of driving the car). 🤸🏼♀️Child with ADHD: Less focused on one activity, quickly switching between toys, but generally playing with them in a typical way. If you notice play patterns similar to the second or third example, it may be worth discussing your concerns with a specialist for a professional evaluation. Early awareness is very important — the earlier support begins, the better the chances to support a child’s development. #kidsbyscience #autism #autismawareness #parentingtips #ADHD
