What US academia doesn’t want you to know 🤫 Considering MSc or PhD? APPLY TO BOTH!! 1️⃣US PhD programs don’t require you to have a masters first! Some schools definitely prefer it (you can check this out by looking at admissions history of different programs or by chatting with current and former students) but why do a masters if you plan to do a PhD and don’t have to spend the $$ first?? When I was applying for grad programs, I applied for both PhD and MSc programs at the same time, with the plan to do an MSc that led me into a PhD program if I didn’t get into a PhD program the first go round. 2️⃣Most US PhD programs offer a mastering out option halfway through your PhD (they don’t like to advertise this!). So if you can get into a PhD program without a Masters, DO IT…you get paid to get your masters on the way 🤫 3️⃣Why do a PhD if you don’t have to?? MSc is a great option if you want to work in a lab or want to get more expertise in science but don’t necessarily want the trauma a PhD might inflict 😅😘 Don’t feel like you need to do a PhD just because your undergrad lab is telling you to, and DEFINITELY don’t do it just to call yourself “Dr” lol that has the highest burnout rate right there. #chloethescientist #womeninscience #WomeninSTEM #scicom #stemeducation #scienceeducation #stemlearning#sciencecommunication #stem #steminist #science #phd #phdcareer #sciencecareer #sciencejob #gradschool #phdjourney

A masters degree is harder than you think… here’s why‼️ #Research #phd #masters #study #studytip

3 Warning Signs a PhD Isn’t for You 🚩 1. You’re in it for the Dr. title or academic validation. If your main motivation is having “Doctor” before your name, impressing people, or chasing academic validation, a PhD will get old fast. Even if you finish, you might still feel empty. A PhD is long, challenging, and often isolating.. so if curiosity and a passion for research are not driving you, it’s going to be hard to keep going. 2. You don’t really know what you want to do. Being good at school doesn’t automatically mean grad school is the right path. Grad school is not an extension of undergrad. If you haven’t thought carefully about your long-term goals or what kind of life you want, you might end up spending 5+ years on a path that doesn’t excite you. 3. You’re doing it for the money. If you think a PhD automatically leads to a high-paying job, think again. Most PhDs earn less than people assume, and the opportunity cost is huge. If your main goal is financial gain, there are better, faster ways to achieve it in industry or other jobs. 🔁 Share or repost if this resonates with you. 💬 Thinking about doing a PhD? 3 Warning Signs 🚩That Indicate a PhD Isn’t Right for You: 📌 SHARE WITH YOUR FRIENDS IF ANY OF THESE APPLIES TO THEM 1️⃣ If the title ‘Dr.’ in your name is your primary motivation, reconsider. Is the allure of prestige worth 5-7 years dedicated to a topic you’re not passionate about and make you hate everyday what you are doing for years? Pursuing a PhD requires deep interest and commitment to your field, not just a desire for titles. 2️⃣ Believing a PhD will automatically lead to better job prospects in industry can be misleading. In many non-research sectors, the impact of a PhD on career advancement is minimal. Consider how many industry leaders actually hold a PhD—expertise and experience often weigh more than an advanced degree in climbing the corporate ladder. 3️⃣ Limited Interest in Academic Research A PhD demands a deep dive into specific topics—if you’re a generalist, this path may not suit you. Are you ready to commit years to understanding every intricate detail of a narrow subject? If not, the intense focus required for a PhD will likely not align with your strengths or interests. 2 bachelors, 2 masters and 1 PhD without student debt, here’s how: Undergrad, double bachelors: I lived at home and worked multiple part-time jobs to cover fees, books, transportation, and meals. -Year 1 & 2: Covered by FAFSA (grants) -Year 3 & 4: I was no longer eligible for FAFSA. A little more than half of my tuition was covered by scholarships from the Honors college. The rest was out of pocket paid by my parents ($5k-7k each year). Masters 1: I lived away from home and worked two jobs to cover rent, bills, car note, fees and other expenses. -I did a 12 month program that was covered by a tuition waiver for fall and spring, but I paid ~$2k for fees. The summer term which was my full-time internship, was not covered by my waiver and was $8k. But, I received two scholarships from my department that left me and my parents to pay $4k out of pocket. Masters 2 and PhD: I lived at home year 1 and then moved out and had similar expenses to pay as before when I didn’t live at home. This second masters was en route to my PhD. I received a tuition waiver and an assistantship for 5 years. I also worked part-time over the summers and held multiple research assistantships. For one year, received a national fellowship that covered my tuition and provided a stipend. Lastly, I had a state-wide fellowship for 4 years. Keep in mind these six years, I received many small scholarships to cover conferences, research expenses etc. -Fees were not covered for the duration of my program, so I paid ~$800 each semester for 6 years, 12 semesters = ~$9,600 total. In sum, graduating without student debt is not easy but it is possible! I applied for scholarships each year and sometimes each semester to cover any school related expenses. I also had the help of my parents for my undergrad and first masters. Saving and budgeting was also essential given that my part time jobs and stipends were low amounts.

do the pros outweigh the cons for getting a PhD? i’ll leave that as an exercise for the reader! #phd #gradschool #research

Everyone talks about “how hard” a PhD is, but there’s so much no one tells you, especially as an international student. Here’s the honest side 👇 1️⃣ A PhD in the U.S. can be truly life-changing Not just academically, your confidence, exposure, network, and career trajectory completely shift once you’re inside the system. 2️⃣ A PhD from a top 100 U.S. university carries serious global value In many cases, it makes you eligible for faculty or research positions in countries like India without needing additional qualifying exams (depending on the institution). That’s a huge advantage no one talks about enough. 3️⃣ Most PhDs in the U.S. are fully funded 💰 Tuition covered + a stipend. Typically $25k–$45k/year, depending on location and funding source. You’re not paying to do a PhD, you’re being paid to train as a researcher. 4️⃣ U.S. PhDs are longer, and that’s not a bad thing Yes, they take more time because of coursework in the first 1–2 years. But those classes actually make you a stronger, more independent researcher long-term. 5️⃣ Getting in is competitive… staying in is transformative Admissions are tough, especially for international students. But once you’re in, the opportunities are unmatched. 6️⃣ Fellowships exist (even if your lab is low on funding) University fellowships, external grants, travel awards, there are so many options if you know where to look. 7️⃣ Conferences & travel are real 🌍 Most U.S. grad schools offer conference funding. I’ve presented, traveled nationally and internationally through graduate school support alone. 8️⃣ Research exposure is next level Top U.S. universities work on cutting-edge problems and regularly publish in high-impact journals, that experience stays with you forever. A PhD in the U.S. is hard, but it can also open doors you didn’t even know existed. If you want to learn how international students actually get into U.S. PhD programs, comment “PhD” 💬 . . . . . . . . . . #phdinusa #indiansinusa #studyabroad #nrilife #indianstudentsabroad
