The greeks used variety of values for the number π, some good some bad. A result which has a modern flavour is one given by Archimedes. He was able to provide a nice upper and lower bound for value of π as 223/71 < π < 22/7 The method he employed was approximating the contour of the circle by polygons. Since Archimedes knew how to compute the lengths of the sides of regular polygons with great accuracy, he was able to obtain information about circles. He used polygons with 96 sides 🤯 (This animation shows polygons upto 400 sides) The result given by Archimedes is modern in outlook, precisely because it's phrased as an inequality. When mathematicians are faced with quantities which are hard to estimate they try at least to pin them between two other quantities which they can compute.
