In January I set out to learn about mold making for slip casting as a change of pace after a busy holiday season. I bought a tutorial video from @hammerlyceramics and my dad came over to help me. I think he was actually more interested in this process than me. I never intended to use slip casting as a way to make my work. Now, I’m loving everything about this process and constantly thinking about what I can make next. What’s really interesting is that my Dad’s great-grandfather immigrated to the US from Germany in the late 1800’s. In Germany he worked in the production of porcelain goods made through slip casting. When he came to the United States he worked as a kiln builder for glass production. The process of taking an old glass item and turning it into a slip casting mold for porcelain production feels like I’m speaking directly to my ancestors. *Edit - the auto-generated captions are a little messed up at the beginning. Demystifying slipcasting 🤗 I just opened a fresh bag of slip so I’m testing the density before I pour it into my plaster molds. This’ll tell me if I should leave the slip in my molds for longer or shorter than average. The lower the specific gravity (or density), the more watery it is. Is this helpful?
