Week 3 of our Potting mix trial. These are Australian Standard Premium Potting Mixes so you expect plants to grow in them. The results have been surprising. Osmocote Premium Plus was the second best in our last trial, this time is performing poorly. Other mixes which were terrible last time, are performing well this time. A couple are just terrible. It just shows how unreliable these mixes are, and it’s a lottery whether plants grow or don’t grow. The standard needs to be improved, if we are to have confidence, in buying them. Follow our journey to see if any of these Lettuces reach their full potential. Will we get to eat them? The Lettuce is just litmus test, we could have used other plants. If we used an indoor plant or a herb, we’d be getting similar results. Either plants grow, or they don’t. My favorite soil mix for my tropical houseplants 🙌🏼🌿 These are the exact products that I use for my soil mix!! ↓ ↓ ↓ • FoxFarm Ocean Forest Potting Soil (linked on amazon!) • MiracleGro Perlite (I prefer Sta-Green which is also found @ Lowe’s!) • Gubler Orchids Fine Grade Orchid Grow Mix (found @ Lowe’s!) You can add so much more to your mixes but these 3-4 base ingredients are *chef’s kiss* for any basic soil mix and my tropical plants all grow so well in it! Can be used for indoor AND outdoor plants! Mix up a big batch & be ready for spring repots 🙌🏻 It’s truly the best houseplant soil mix I’ve found. Garden confessions: I don’t buy potting mix. Three years ago I switched to bulk compost — my favorite is the veggie mix from @soil3organiccompost and this giant perlite bag from Amazon. I use it for seed starting, potting up, grow bags, potted trees and containers. There’s no real recipe that I follow. I just mix in enough perlite until it “looks” like potting mix to me. If you insisted.. I’d say something like 3 scoops of soil for every 1 scoop of perlite. It’s worked out well for me and I haven’t looked back! Do you mix your own potting mix? DIY Houseplant Potting Mix! I’m all about that chunky mix, because when it comes to houseplants, good drainage is everything. Potting soil: A rich, moisture-holding base that provides nutrients. Perlite: Lightens the mix and boosts aeration and drainage. Orchid bark: Adds chunky texture and airflow, helping mimic a plant’s natural environment. Horticultural charcoal: Supports drainage, adds nutrients, and keeps the mix fresh by absorbing impurities.
