It’s really important to repot an orchid into a larger pot with a mix that’s more suitable for the conditions of growing indoors. Orchids normally come in a tight pot of sphagnum moss so that it’s more compact for shipping and storage. But this setup creates a higher risk of root rot for the regular orchid purchaser because moss can get too damp and stay wet for too long. If you have an orchid that has lost a lot of roots, using this spaghnum moss mix is very helpful. Be sure you are sanitizing your pruners or scissors when cutting those roots. This orchid was left sitting in a corner for too long behind others and it became severely dehydrated. I’m no expert, but 3 people asked me for orchid tips so here I am 🤓 • when choosing orchids, I look for bright, green, healthy roots • keep them in bright indirect sunlight and if it’s hot, I think I need to move them further from window because last summer, many flowers died 🥲 • water when the roots look silver. I run them under water til roots are green then let them drain before putting them back into the pot (I hear they like a flood/drought situation) • probably don’t “feed” them with plant food when they’re in bloom cause it may shock them and cause flowers to fall prematurely (I’ve used @instantplantfood 2x so far) • snip roots when they’re black/rotten, once the flowers fall off, you can snip the stem if it’s dried out • (optional) can repot the orchid in orchid bark/potting mix hopefully these tips help 😃 please double check with google/ecosia

Here’s how I did it: 🪨I started by removing the existing media and rinsing the roots. A little bit of soil left on the roots no big deal. ✂️Then with clean pruners I removed any diseased roots the plant had. These are going to be the darker, mushy ones. And finally sprayed the roots down with 3% hydrogen peroxide to prevent further spread of bacteria. 🪴Then using a chunky orchid soil mix planted the orchid in a clear pot. 💦Finally added water to rehydrate it in its new home. #houseplant #orchid #plants

💁🏻‍♂️Some more orchid repotting tips! Clear pots are great for orchids (check out my “orchid pots” link in my profile for my amazon store where you can get various sizes). Clear pots are great to see the health of the orchid root system, and because they do perform some photosynthesize for the plant. In my greenhouse, I leave the pots exposed, but indoors in the house, I slip them in ceramic pots for aesthetic purposes. A great time to repot is after your orchid has finished blooming. In this case in my reel, this plant did not bloom unlike most of my other Phalaenopsis orchids at the time of publishing this reel, so now is a great time because days are getting longer and plants are waking up and getting ready to start to grow new leaves and roots. After you take your orchid out of its old pot, cut away any dead roots. I didn’t have any to show you in this video! (But trust me, I usually do.) In this video I used the Phalaenopsis Orchid Potting Mix from Better-Gro. Soaking the mix overnight (or even for a few days) really helps to hydrate the bark because it can be REALLY dry right out of the bag! You can also mix in 1 part of sphagnum moss to 3 parts bark mix to retain a little more moisture. #phalaenopsisorchid #repotting #orchidcare
