What is Lipoprotein A (Lp-a)? •    Lp-a is a unique type of lipoprotein, composed of a cholesterol particle linked to a specific protein called apolipoprotein-a. •    Lp-a levels are largely genetically determined, meaning that elevated levels can be passed down from parents to their children. Lp-a levels can be measured through a blood test. Here at OAKWOOD, we check for Lp-a levels at every visit! The normal range for Lp-a is less than 30 but our OPTIMAL range is less than 15!! Checking your Lp-a levels serves as a more in-depth analysis in determining overall cardiovascular health and risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. Many individuals have normal cholesterol levels but have elevated levels of Lp-a. Especially in these cases, Lp-a is a very important indicator of heart diseases. Risk Factors: •    High levels of Lp-a are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks, strokes, and aortic valve stenosis. •    This is because Lp-a can promote the development of atherosclerosis (narrowing and hardening of arteries) by depositing cholesterol in arterial walls, potentially leading to plaque formation

I’ve spoken a lot about elevated lipoprotein a or lp(a) which is a genetic marker for cardiovascular disease. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do from a diet and lifestyle standpoint to reduce this level, and there are no targeted medications to reduce this on the market at present, but several are in the works. There was a phase 2 trial recently published in @nejm regarding lepodisiran, which is a small interfering RNA that disrupts the synthesis of lipoprotein a. The study show that a single injection resulted in a 94% reduction in lipoprotein a levels at 180 days and 88% reduction out to a year of follow up. We still need a phase 3 trial, looking at the reduction of cardiovascular events with the lowering of lipoprotein a both for primary and secondary prevention patients. Albumin – the most abundant protein; maintains osmotic pressure and transports hormones, drugs, and other substances. 2. Globulins – include antibodies and proteins that help in immunity and blood clotting. 🔹 Normal Values • Total Protein: 6.0 – 8.3 g/dL • Albumin: 3.5 – 5.0 g/dL • Globulin: 2.3 – 3.5 g/dL • A/G Ratio: 1.0 – 2.2 🔹 Clinical Significance 1. Low Protein Levels (Hypoproteinemia) Causes: • Liver disease: ↓ synthesis (e.g. cirrhosis, hepatitis) • Kidney disease: ↑ loss in urine (nephrotic syndrome) • Malnutrition or malabsorption: ↓ protein intake or absorption • Burns or blood loss: protein loss through damaged tissues • Chronic illness or inflammation Symptoms: • Edema (due to ↓ oncotic pressure) • Muscle wasting • Fatigue, weakness 2.
