What the heck are BERRIES? Botanically speaking, a berry is a fleshy fruit that develops from the ovary of a single flower. Think of a blueberry flower where each small white urn-shaped flower turns into a single, delicious blueberry.                    Berries typically have a thin skin (exocarp) and the tasty part we eat (mesocarp) is juicy. True berries, which tomatoes, grapes, and gooseberries are great examples of, also have numerous small seeds. There are two other groupings within the berry fruit type and I’ll introduce those at a later time… they’ll kind of blow your mind 🍈🍋 As for the non-berry fruit mentioned:        🙃 Raspberry is an “AGGREGATE FRUIT”. Each red cluster we pluck off of the cane is actually a bunch of little fruit. The little fruit in this instance is a single “drupe” which is actually another type of fleshy fruit. A drupe is a single-seeded fruit where the seed is surrounded by a pit, or a “stone”. Inside of the pit is the actual seed. Yes, we’re talking “stone fruit”. Classic examples are plum, cherry, and peaches.        SO! That raspberry you’re holding is actually a bunch of tiny fruit, called “drupelets” that are morphologically more similar to cherries than blueberries (true berry). Next time when you get raspberry “seeds” stuck in your teeth, blow your mind a little when you remind yourself that those aren’t the actual seeds you’re crunching on… those are the pits/stones!        🙃 Mulberry is a “MULTIPLE FRUIT”. This is a funky situation. Pineapple is the more common example of a multiple fruit. These fruit come about when there are numerous little flowers (usually borne in tight clustered bunches/spikes) that develop and the ovaries fuse together to form a clump of fruit.        🙃 Juneberry aka serviceberry is a berry-like “POME”. Think of an apple or pear, but tiny!        🍓🍓🍓 And what about strawberries?? They’re super funky, too. And definitely not a “berry”.  Stay tuned for details about this neat fruit/fruits…

There, I said it out loud! 🍃Herbalists and midwives experienced in botanical medicine have long documented the safe use of red raspberry leaf throughout pregnancy, NOT just at the end! These lil buds are Spotted Wing Drosophila larvae and are in berries! Super common in raspberries! The super squishy, juicy ones specifically. If you’re picking and they fall to the ground, leave them, chances are they’re super ripe and those are the ones the fruit flies lay in. Pick the ones that are ripe or almost ripe, you can spread them apart and check to see which ones have it and which don’t to get the texture and look you’re trying to avoid. That’s why it’s important to harvest raspberries every freaking day unless you’re okay with a little extra protein! 😆

Don’t say I didn’t warn you🍒 💩 Cherries aren’t bad, though. So just go slow and eat a small portion at a time, savoring every bite, to prevent any gut upset. And if your gut does great with cherries, you’re the exception and not the rule so 👏🏼 we celebrate your iron gut and also validate that others may have discomfort with too much. Why? After my last post on blackberries, I was so sad to see some people say they don’t pick wild fruits because they don’t like the bugs 🐛 🐜 🐞 so I thought I’d make this post! I totally get it, the other day I picked a plum off the ground (which had been there longer than I thought) and bit into it and there was a huuuge worm 🫠 and it wasn’t nice! But I would be MUCH more suspicious of fruit that didn’t attract any bugs. A clear sign it’s been or sprayed with a load of toxic pesticide sprays 🤨 But if you pick firm, ripe fruit, you probably won’t find any bugs, and even if you do, they’re not harmful to eat (our hunter gatherer ancestors would have been munching them down no questions asked!) AND they’re easy to get rid of! 🥳 Just soak your berries for an hour or two with some salty / vinegary water. Roughly for every pint of water you use, add 1 TBSP salt and 1 TBSP vinegar! Easy peasy! 🥂✨ The salt draws out a little insects and larvae through osmosis and vinegar us acidic so it helps to dislodge pests while cleaning surface bacteria and mould spores 🙌 White vinegar is best but I have literally just run out so I used proper apple cider vinegar which is why mine looks a little odd 😅 Anyway.. anyone got any good bug eating stories?! 💚🌾 #blackberries #wildfood #foraging

Let’s clean these raspberries so they stay perfectly plump for our new recipes. Raspberries are very delicate, so we’ll clean them gently. I usually use baking soda and vinegar to clean my fruits, but not for these berries. Just place them in a colander and gently run cold water.
