I ALWAYS do this. I started it when I first became a hygienist- and to be completely transparent, I first did it so that I would remember what side faced down 😅 Then I realized it serves a few other functions: 1. Reduces patient anxiety. Out of sight = out of mind. Not seeing sharp or unfamiliar tools keeps patients way calmer. 2. Better first impression when they sit down. A clean, covered setup feels more welcoming than a tray full of instruments. 3. Keeps everything clean and protected. Acts as an extra barrier from aerosols and contaminants before things are used.
