Plastic recycling doesn’t work and will never work ♻️❌ So far plastics industry is following the tobacco industry’s playbook and it may never admit to the failure of plastics recycling. The United States in 2021 had a dismal recycling rate of about 5 percent for post-consumer plastic waste, down from a high of 9.5 percent in 2014, when the U.S. exported millions of tons of plastic waste to China and counted it as recycled—even though much of it wasn’t.

Together, we can recycle right, Gilbert! 💙♻️ Wishcycling feels good, but putting the wrong items in the bin can send an entire load to the landfill. Common NOs we see in blue bins 🚫: 🛍️ Plastic bags (including Amazon and other packaging — don’t bag recyclables!) 🍕 Greasy pizza boxes 🍓 Plastic produce containers (like berry clamshells) 🥤 Plastic cups 🥚 Styrofoam 🍔 Aluminum trays and foil 🏠 Air filters 🌳 Landscaping 🫙 Glass (take bottles, jugs and jars to our drop-off locations: gilbertaz.gov/Recycle) YEAH! These belong in your blue bin ✅: 🥛 Plastic bottles, jugs and jars 🥫 Metal food and beverage cans 📦 Cardboard 📃 Paper (not shredded, soiled, metallic, waxed, or tissue) Save this list for later! 🚨 This is where your recycling really goes when it is collected by the @cityofct. Come behind the scenes with me at the Coastal Park Material Recovery Facility, run by @ria_recycle where clear recycling bags collected from certain suburbs that fall within the Think Twice program are sorted every single day. Right next door? The coastal park landfill site and it’s filling up fast. Seeing these two side by side is confronting. One system gives materials a second life. The other is running out of space. 👉 Do you know what actually belongs in your clear bag? 👉 Do you know if you live in an area that is serviced by the Think Twice program? Small change to make a big difference #124: Share it with someone who still thinks their recycling “doesn’t go somewhere”.
