A root smudge doesn’t have to be a significantly darker root. A root smudge is simply smudging the highlight lines for a more seamless grow out and a more expensive look. Typically on my brightest blondes I will use their natural level and half a level lighter, to create the slightest smudge to blend their highlights in with their natural hair. We love expensive looking hair around here, so the fine tuning details are sooooo important. ✨

5️⃣ tips & tricks on how I root shadow 👉🏼 I used #dialight 7N with 9 volume @lorealpro 1️⃣ The technique required it: placement is everything right? Not every foil placement will be seamless without a root shadow. 2️⃣ Your client needs to go longer between appointments: the root shadow will make sure they get longevity between appointments. It’ll buff out any lines to have a seamless grow out. 3️⃣ When using #dialight from @lorealpro_education_us formulate at the same natural level: in my opinion Dialight will have more coverage the longer you leave it on. I left this on for 10 minutes & had the best end result! Mixing ratio is 1oz to 1.5oz 4️⃣ Apply in the same foil pattern: I always start right down the part & then move into my foil pattern. I feel that there’s less risk of missing a section. You can see where you placed the foils are you move thru the hair. 5️⃣ Leave the hairline for last: most clients want to be lighter around their face. If you leave it for last- it stays on the least. I don’t bring down the shadow as far either! BONUS: 6️⃣ PUT YOUR ROOT TAP ON AT THE CHAIR. You can see better - you’ll have a better end result! Ever toned a root a though…: “Why does it look like I did nothing?” Here’s the thing, if your roots shadow is to light … 💥 it disappears 💥 you loose all your contrast 💥 and the grow-out? Meh… 😒 When you are working with a Demi permanent colour remember 👉🏻 it behaves like lip gloss👄 Whatever tone you’ve just lifted the hair to? It shines through your gloss, always!!! Have you wondered why I root melt? Adding a root melt to my highlights creates more of a lived in natural look. Adding a root melt in a shade to match your natural colour softens the root, creating a blurred line for softer grow out also extending the longevity of the colour. Less frequent appointments means healthier hair. Formulate your root smudge 1/2-1 level darker than their natural color! This varies depending on what you’re trying to achieve with their hair, but I do this when I’m doing a lived in color and want the lighter pieces to blend in seamlessly with their root. Your formula will also vary based on the color line you’re using. 99% of the time I root with ShadesEQ. That color line is a bit more transparent than, for example, kenra demi color. In my experience 6N in kenra will appear darker after it’s done processing and provide more coverage than a 6N in shades. If I have a client with a natural level 7, I’ll typically use a mix of level 6 colors for their root, just to make sure there’s no harsh lines of any sort. I also let it sit for the full processing time! It can be tempting to rinse it out sooner because it looks SO dark but just trust the process! And since you’re using something that’s only a little bit darker than their natural, as their hair grows out the color will fade just a tiny bit so you won’t see any sort of line of demarcation. 3 Tips for a Seamless Root Shadow EVERY TIME 👇🏼 1. Include the cowlick: Pull your comb farther back to the crown to include the cowlick section. This will make sure that everything stays cohesive and eliminates any disconnect in the angled placement of the root shadow. 🙌🏻 2. Horizontal sections: While both vertical and horizontal sections work, I prefer horizontal because it keeps sections clean with no risk of color transfer. This allows me to see exactly where to shadow and drag for perfect cohesiveness!!! 3. Smudge with every section: As I apply the root shadow, I smudge with my wet brush (or Unbrush) after each section for a smooth blend. After letting the root shadow sit for about 5 minutes, I go back with my gloss and blend them both together.
