Welcome back to another episode of mic’d up Monday I’m breaking down the process of a root shadow and sharing all the tips how I create the most seamless melt. ⚡️ We all love a good transformation but that’s not what I want to say. It’s very easy to judge a bad hair color because we know how much time it takes to correct it. 🙈 Made a mistake? We all do! Don’t be afraid to make mistakes,be afraid of not learning from them. Invest in your education and get the training doll and practice. Don’t try on your clients first. If you are not comfortable, be honest and say you are not experienced with that and give another option that you’re sure it will give the best result. They will appreciate your honesty a lot more than a bad job. P.S. Invest in yourself, in your education. There’s nothing better! 😉 . There’s no absolute right or wrong when it comes to root formulas, but for me, I’ll reach for acidic over alkaline 99.9% of the time The only exceptions? 👇 1️⃣ When a client wants some grey coverage or blending 2️⃣ When I need to bump their base up a level As a lived-in colour specialist, acidic formulas are my ride or die because: ✅ They don’t disrupt the natural base ✅They fade seamlessly, giving that dreamy longevity lived-in colour is all about ✅They keep the hair silky soft + restore it back to its natural pH Tell me, what’s your go to? 5️⃣ tips & tricks on how I root shadow 1️⃣ The technique required it: placement is everything right? Not every foil placement will be seamless without a root shadow. 2️⃣ Your client needs to go longer between appointments: the root shadow will make sure they get longevity between appointments. It’ll buff out any lines to have a seamless grow out. 3️⃣ When using #dialight - formulate at the same natural level: in my opinion Dialight will have more coverage the longer you leave it on. I left this on for 10 minutes & had the best end result! Mixing ratio is 1oz to 1.5oz 4️⃣ Apply in the same foil pattern: I always start right down the part & then move into my foil pattern. I feel that there’s less risk of missing a section. You can see where you placed the foils are you move thru the hair. 5️⃣ Leave the hairline for last: most clients want to be lighter around their face. If you leave it for last- it stays on the least. I don’t bring down the shadow as far either! BONUS: 6️⃣ PUT YOUR ROOT TAP ON AT THE CHAIR. You can see better - you’ll have a better end result! BUT FIRST, WHAT is a root shadow and WHO is it for? ⚡️I use a root shadow (aka root tap, root smudge) to literally “shadow” and blur the line of demarcation after I’ve done highlights. ⚡️Typically I root shadow everyone who gets highlights to soften the grow out. I WON’T do it if the client is adamant about remaining really really bright right from the roots. FORMULA DETAILS: ✖️I use a Demi permanent color ✖️I use a level that’s 1-2 levels darker than the highlight (or the same level for a very minor shadow!) ✖️I love mixing a cool and a neutral or warm tone together (this would be adjusted if someone had a TON of warmth after they were lifted) ✖️I love using @schwarzkopfusa Igora Vibrance and combining a -0 and a -1 or -19 or even a -4 for a smidge more warmth! Secrets for root shadowing with @redken Shades EQ 👇👇 1. Shades EQ is an acidic color therefore translucent in nature. When rooting I choose to go one level darker than the clients natural color when trying to achieve tone on tone. 2. Most people root first then apply their global toner. I strongly suggest you try doing your global toner first, rinsing, then apply your root color. This way your root color essentially has an anchor to latch onto instead of a raw highlight. This will give you better coverage and longevity. 3. When battling hot roots or warm transition areas try this! Intermix your Shades levels. For example: Instead of using a 06N try mixing a 04N + 08N to make a level 6. With this formulation you will now have the power and cooler background pigments with the 04N to neutralize the unwanted warmth and the 08N to balance your tone.
