I have made a LOT of mistakes over the years as we've learned to tend to our roses. Number 1 mistake! Underestimating how much roses LOVE to be pruned. They are strong, hearty plants that thrive with a solid trim. If you want the full length video comment ROSE and I'll send it your way so you can quite literally trim your rose bushes with us. Here are the main things to remember/steps we do when pruning: - cut out all dead canes/sticks first - then decide which of the remaining canes you will keep. For younger rose plants you'll keep 2-3, older 5-7 - take out any canes that are rubbing on each other - then working on one cane at a time cut about 1/3 of it off just above a leaf bud or node - the goal is that all of the canes and branches are reaching out and away from the middle of the plant to allow good air circulation - once you're done, clean up all debris, dropped rose leafs, cut off branches and dispose of them in your yardwaste or trash. Rose trimmings are not great for smaller compost containers because they break down too slow, and there is a chance that you could spread disease from one rose plant to another when you use your compost. Here in the PNW it's the perfect time to trim your roses - go take a look and see if the leaf buds are starting to swell! 🌹✂️ Pruning Roses: The Right Way! ✂️🌹 Forget the Valentine’s Day myth! ❌🌹 The best time to prune is AFTER the threat of frost has passed in your area—so new growth doesn’t get damaged by a surprise freeze. Here’s your step-by-step guide to spring pruning: 1️⃣ Start with sanitized, sharp pruners for clean cuts & healthy plants. ✂️🧼 2️⃣ Remove dead, damaged, or diseased canes + anything blocking airflow or that could cause damage later. 🪴 3️⃣ Make cuts at a 45° angle about ¼” above an outward-facing bud to promote healthy growth & reduce disease risk. 🌱 4️⃣ Don’t remove more than ⅓ of the plant at one time to avoid stress. 🚫 5️⃣ Feed & mulch after pruning to nourish, retain moisture & suppress weeds. 🌿🍂 ✨ PRO TIP: Always prune on a dry day to reduce the risk of infection! ☀️ 🌼 When to prune? Early spring/late winter (before blooms flush) is best for shrub roses, but a light prune in early fall is optional. Remember—roses can handle heavy pruning, but shape them based on YOUR aesthetic preference! 💕 Ready to prep your roses for a gorgeous spring? Why doesn’t anybody know this!? Or better yet, why isn’t this info on the plant tag? March is rose pruning season for me in zone 7B and I’ll train strong central stems to angles to encourage top to bottom blooms. I’ll also cut back any side shoots less than a pencil width thick to 4” from the cane because they won’t hold a bloom. If your climbing roses don’t bloom well, this may be why! Did you know this about proper rose pruning? I just published a FREE rose pruning guide on my subscriber channel if you need more help. #climbingroses #roses #rosegarden #gardeningtips #cottagegarden
