FAQs about sand on the lawn: Why? We use sand to level out the low spots. This makes the lawn nice and smooth so a mower wont dip down and scalp the grass. Why sand? Dirt is hard to spread perfectly smooth and dirt will settle more. Dirt can also introduce new weed seeds ti your lawn. What kind of sand? Masonry sand because it has no rocks in it. Can i do this with any grass type? Yes, BUT, it is really hard to rake sand nice and smooth in tall grass. The taller, the harder. People have done it with fescue for exsmple but they usually will do it in the fall, cut the grass down to an inch and overseed on top of the sand to fill things back in. With tall grass it might be easier to just slowly fill dips over time so you dont smother the grass. What is the best time to do it? Whenever your grass is growing most vigorously and has the most time to recover. So, warm season grass - summer. Cool season grass, spring or fall. What is that rake? This technique is known as "Sand Fixation." ​The Science of Stopping a Dune ​Sand dunes move because wind pushes the grains up and over the crest. To stop this, engineers must disrupt the wind flow: ​The Grid System: Workers are laying down a vast network of fabric tubes filled with sand. They arrange them in perfect 1x1 meter squares. ​Aerodynamics: These raised grids increase the "surface roughness" of the desert.
