This is sand leveling or topdressing. It creates a more level surface for your lawn by filling in lower areas. I use masonry sand since I have Bermuda. If you have a cool season type of grass, you may want to look at doing more of a topsoil heavy blend. I like to put down a little fertilizer prior to, and after to ensure the Bermuda is growing aggressively through the sand. I water every other day for a week and is typically fully recovered in less than 2 weeks. The deeper the spot, the longer it takes. That results transition tho 😮. More detailed tips 👇 Don’t do it with tall grass - If you try to drop sand on tall grass and rake it smooth, you’re going to have a bad time. Sand leveling is more helpful for short lawns, especially when using a reel mower / greens mower. I have tried putting sand on grass that is 3/4” and the rake was getting caught a bouncing. Scalp the lawn first - I tell people to cut the grass as low as possible before putting sand down. Preferably half an inch or shorter. This helps spread the sand smooth and evenly. It also gives the grass a nice height of cut reset. Use a wide rake for leveling - The wider the rake, the bigger the gaps that will be filled. You can use a 36” or 42” leveling rake, or, even a 10ft leveling drag. A wide rake keeps the sand in the low spot whereas a small rake will pull the sand out of the dips. If you know you have a long, narrow dip that needs leveled, position the rake perpendicular to the low area so the sand stays in the valley. Proceed with caution on cool season lawns - Warm season grasses like Bermuda and zoysia recover from scalping and being covered with sand very well. Cool season grasses can recover, but if I were going to sand level Kentucky bluegrass or rye, I would probably do multiple lighter top dressings over time as opposed to one heavy one. Or, I would do a sand leveling as part of a fall renovation including an overseed to make sure the lawn is full again after recovery. Give plenty of fertilizer and water - Water a lot after the sand is down because the grass needs it but also a lot of water can help the sand settle down into low spots. You can fertilize on top of the sand since you are going to be watering but you could also fertilize before as long as the fertilizer gets watered in first so it doesn’t get moved around into piles by your rake when you are raking the sand. FAQs about sand on the lawn: Why? We use sand to level out the low spots. This makes the lawn nice and smooth so a mower wont dip down and scalp the grass. Why sand? Dirt is hard to spread perfectly smooth and dirt will settle more. Dirt can also introduce new weed seeds ti your lawn. What kind of sand? Masonry sand because it has no rocks in it. Can i do this with any grass type? Yes, BUT, it is really hard to rake sand nice and smooth in tall grass. The taller, the harder. People have done it with fescue for exsmple but they usually will do it in the fall, cut the grass down to an inch and overseed on top of the sand to fill things back in. With tall grass it might be easier to just slowly fill dips over time so you dont smother the grass. What is the best time to do it? Whenever your grass is growing most vigorously and has the most time to recover. So, warm season grass - summer. Cool season grass, spring or fall. What is that rake? Sand leveling with @rootedlawnco made super easy with the right tools! Thanks to @land.zie for lending us the @swardmancom mowers with ALL of the attachments! We used the Groomer and Verticutter attachments to pick up the grass and open up the canopy to allow the sand to get to the soil layer easily. Then we mowed with the 10-blade reel bringing the height of cut down from 0.6 to 0.5 inches. Then we threw down a bunch of mason sand and knocked the piles down with a landscape rake. Next we leveled things out using the @ryanknorrlawncare lawn level rake.
