Everytime I've made a God loving vs God fearing reel, I have received certain comments asking about the scriptural basis of the stories I depicted. A lot of these comments come from a place of curiosity and not malintent. But it is important to understand something here. It is not necessary for a folklore to be coherent with a scripture. In Hinduism, scriptures have largely been the domain of a handful of influential men : the ones will class and caste privilege. The majority of the population: oppressed castes and women were actually brutally punished for something as simple as listening to a scripture. And no, this was NOT British or Mughal influence. Casteism and misogyny was a problem ever since the later Vedic era. Invasions or colonisation didn't create these issues. These folk songs were actually written as sarcastic protests against caste and gender discrimination. While the names of the deities are derived from scriptures, their personalities are often not scripture - accurate. Some examples among Bengali Hindus: Durga - darling daughter Shiva - misfit son-in-law Ganesha - fat, but intelligent grandson Kartik - rebel grandson Laxmi - high-maintenance granddaughter Saraswati - nerdy granddaughter Radha - delulu friend / rebel daughter Krishna - rizzler friend / naughty son By making God relatable and accessible for all, these folk songs have actually become more popular than scriptures. If you ask an average Hindu to recite a shlok from Bhagwat Gita, many won't be able to do it. But ask anyone in India to sing a song about the love between Radha and Krishna? They will be able to sing atleast 2 lines of multiple songs, even if they are not Hindu. This is the power of democratisation through love. No caste or gender norms can stop it. This development is not unique to the Indian Hindu community. This happened among the Muslims too. I didn't grow up around Muslims, so it's not second nature to me, unlike these songs about Hindu deities. Nowhere in the Old Testament does it explicitly state that you can add books or that you can make a New Testament. How do these Christians know that they had the authority to do that? It is the church that is the pillar and ground of the truth. The scriptures are writings that emerge out of the life of the church. They are not parachuted in from heaven onto the church, but they emerge from the life of the church. Because the church is the pillar and ground of the truth and therefore has the authority, this is how the church can then identify these books as being scriptural.
