Do you want to publish a book but don't know where to start? 🤔 Turns out it's not as difficult as I thought! Here's some info on what I've done: ℹ️ I decided to self-publish my book, "Rooted in Nature" (illustrated introduction to Slavic traditions) with Amazon KDP. ℹ️ Amazon KDP is a self-publishing platform that allows you to sell your books on Amazon worldwide. ℹ️ Creating an author account and listing your books with Amazon KDP is free. You're only charged a portion of the cost for every sold copy of your book. So, no sales == no costs. ℹ️ On the platform, you can find information about available sizes, paper types, and colors. A cost calculator is available where you can check how much money from one book will go to you with selected settings. ℹ️ Decide on the size early and read carefully about margins and bleed! This is essential because the platform will reject your book if it's not in the expected size. ℹ️ I prepared my manuscript (the whole book except the covers) in PDF format. ℹ️ For the cover, you can use the creator available on the platform during the book upload, but I uploaded a PDF file with both covers and a spine in one file. If you decide to upload your cover, there's a tool on the platform that shows you the exact dimensions of the file based on your book size and the number of pages. ℹ️ You can either upload your ISBN for your book or allow Amazon to generate one for you - please read which one is best for your needs! I decided to go with Amazon's ISBN. ℹ️ Uploading a book is quite easy. Have your manuscript, covers, and book description ready, and you're good to go. During the upload process, you'll be able to verify the mockup of your book, select categories, prices, and regions where your book will be sold. ℹ️ You can select the release date or allow Amazon to list your book immediately after a positive review. ℹ️ It usually takes a few days for your book to be reviewed after you upload it. ℹ️ You can order author and proof copies before and after the release at a lower cost. ℹ️ I published physical books, but you can also publish eBooks. Sounds good? 🌞

Answering some of my frequently asked questions left in my comments or DMs about writing and the publishing industry♡ Question 1: Publishing I’ve been asked by so many of you, how to get published. And sorry y’all, but I’m not published either. I can’t exactly give you a ticket to a 6-figure deal. I can however tell you what I know. Which is: there are two types of publishing—self publishing and traditional publishing. Self publishing: You are in complete control of your story and the way you write it. You get to publish it on a platform like Amazon on your own terms. Downside, these don’t show up in stores, and all your sales come from ebooks or hard copies from Amazon. Traditional publishing: It is a beast. There are no guarantees. First, you’d have to query agents with a COMPLETED manuscript; then if you were picked up, that agent would pitch your novel to publishers. And let’s hope it happens. Question 2: Tips on how to get started Read. Read books. Study from reading. Read in your niche/genre, and read outside of it. Read the most recent bestseller that’s getting a movie deal, and read a classic from an author who is long gone now. Read. Read. Read. Question 3: How to say productive Fall in love with the process. I find that I enjoy writing so much more if I love every second of the process, and I’m not just waiting for the finished product. Fall in love with your world, your characters, your stories moral, and fall in love with your words. Question 4: What is MY book about? By far the thing I’ve been asked the most, and I appreciate your enthusiasm more than the world. But I’m also extremely private when it comes to my writing (funny right), and my worst fear is my work getting stolen from me. The breakdown⬇️ **This is NOT me giving advice! Every author’s budget and set of priorities is different. This is nothing more than my experience — bc this is the type of video I wish I would’ve seen before I published my book** **With this series, I pursued self-publishing from the beginning. If you’re traditionally publishing, you shouldn’t be paying a dime<3** 📘WRITING SOFTWARE: I use Word because it also doubles as my formatting software for paperbacks & hardcovers. The baseline price is $109 but look out for sales!! I was able to get lifetime access for just $30 📘EDITORS: I personally choose to pay for line/copy edits and proofreading (done by two completely different people, to get more sets of eyes on the manuscript). If I didn’t have such an amazingly talented beta reading team, I would also consider paying for developmental edits. 📘COVER DESIGN: This price can range from around $50 to literal thousands. Look around on IG, on the web, and don’t be hasty. The cover is so important! 📘MAP: *not necessary!* I personally always knew I wanted a map at the front of my book. If this isn’t your cup of tea, no worries. It’s not a necessity :) 📘ISBNs: This also isn’t completely necessary — while your book will need an ISBN, most companies (Amazön KDP, Ingram, etc) will provide you a free ISBN. But to have the number match across publishing platforms, you’ll have to purchase your own from Bowker 📘ATTICUS: This is how I format my ebooks. There are other platforms out there, but I like this one! (forgot to include) 📘COPYRIGHT: In the US, your work is copyrighted from the second you write it. However… max protection is good. This costs $65ish 💸 I hope this helps if you’re like my past self and want a sneak peek into publishing costs! I could’ve done this cheaper, and I could’ve done it more expensive. A high quality professional cover is one of the most important elements that will get your book to convert into sales. You can publish for free. Even though you can publish for free on Amazon that does not mean you want to. Purchasing your own ISBN (international standard book number) gives you full rights to sell your books metadata and retailers may stock your book online. You’d also be able to have your publishing imprint on your books. ✨ 3. Reviews matter. If you want your book to sell then you want to get good reviews. You want to have at least 5-7 starting out so that when people search for your book they know that others also enjoy it. This will make them more likely to purchase yours vs your competitors.
