You CAN be an engineer working in sales. At least once a week, I get some variation of this comment. “Sales engineer 🙄” “How do you engineer a sale” “They put engineer after everything these days” Sales engineer isn’t my real title. But, I think that: Systems Engineer Solutions Engineer Consulting Engineer are super confusing to someone coming in from outside of the industry. When I graduated college, I knew I liked technology I knew I liked people. So I applied for an Account Executive role. I had NO idea you could be an engineer in sales. If the recruiter didn’t drag me to the other side of the interview room, my story could have ended differently. All of that to say, I use the term sales engineer to help level the playing field and expose younger students to a career they might not know exists. We don’t gatekeep here. P.S.
