Sit on the edge, extend one leg forward, and stand up — this gives you the proper stance distance. Step 2: Reach the back leg behind you. Rest the top of your back foot or your toes on the chair — the top of the foot is usually more comfortable. You can turn the back thigh out slightly for better balance. Step 3: Keep your pelvis neutral and facing forward. Engage your core and maintain a neutral spine. Step 4: Lean your upper body forward about 30 to 45 degrees. Step 5: Lower your body diagonally down and back. Keep the front shin vertical throughout the movement. Stop when your front thigh is parallel to the floor. There’s a tonne of these but here’s four of my favourite that I program often with clients! 🍑 Bulgarians - Large step, sitting down and back into your hip with a forward lean/vertical shin combo for the Glutes Heel elevation, smaller step, driving knee over toe for more quad! Both of these will also train the rec fem (one of your quad muscles) in the back leg 👉🏼 Rear Foot Elevated + Front Heel Elevated - for anyone who struggles with a quad bias Bulgarian, this is a fav. Still get all the quad fun on the planted leg but with less of a stretch on the back leg, makes it a little easier to not fall over lol 🙏🏼 Front Foot Elevated Split Squat - a favourite of mine that’s extremely well balanced. The elevated foot increases the hip flexion for more glute max but the intent is still to drive the knee forward, meaning you’ll get a lot of quad too As I said, plenty more variations but these are just four I really like!
