😭 Being in survival mode is when your mind and body are focused on getting through life rather than fully living it. It usually happens when you’re under a lot of stress, pressure, or uncertainty. Instead of thinking about long-term goals, happiness, or growth, your brain shifts into a basic “just get through today” mindset. You might feel constantly tired, on edge, or overwhelmed, and your energy goes toward handling immediate problems rather than anything bigger. People in survival mode often feel like they’re stuck in a loop—waking up, dealing with responsibilities, and repeating it without much enjoyment or motivation. It’s not laziness or weakness, it’s your brain trying to protect you during a tough period by prioritizing safety and stability over everything else.

The thing about Survival Mode is that for most people who have been through trauma, survival mode was a saving grace. It was the coping mechanisms & ways your body responded that kept hou alert, kept you safe & taught you how to navigate an unsafe world. It’s not a bad thing. It’s necessary. So when you unwind those patterns of survival, it can take years to catch them because some of them are so deeply ingrained they are part of your “personality.” But there’s a differ between “personality” and “organism.” A difference between coping mechanisms and authentic self. You aren’t going “solve” it at once because on top of learning how to recognize your survival skills, you have to heal your personality & move closer towards your authentic self. It will take time and you are allowed to take that time. But if something is pressing down on you, if there is a survival mode skill going on that is causing you more distress, check in with these things first: 1. What physical safety, comfort or care does my body need? Not what my mind thinks I need but what do I hear when I listen to my body? 2. What do I need to change in my day to day life, right now, in this moment that is throwing me into survival? 3. What belief or feeling about the current situation is keeping me hostage on survival?
