Happy Easter Break from the NRC!🩷🐰 FYI- We will be closed on Friday, April 3rd. Check out this reel to see some task-specific training and some Easter themed fun in occupational therapy! OT focuses on meaningful daily tasks that are individualized for each client. Mike previously worked as a fry cook and hopes to return to his previous level of cooking finesse🍳 With TENS and task-specific training throughout the session, he’s well on his way. Go Mike! 👏 #neurorehabilitation #occupationaltherapy #neuroplasticity #taskspecifictraining

Brainstorming ways to support someone with contraversive pushing syndrome! 🧠🌀 This approach uses a large therapy ball for resistance and weight shifting, while facilitating weightbearing on the involved hand. 🖐️ 💫 Environmental adjustments like this help cue midline awareness and promote movement toward the involved side. 💡 📣 Shout out to the amazing therapists: Katy, Emily, Jasmine, and Hannah!! 🤗 #ContraversivePushing #NeuroPT #NeuroOT #TaskSpecificTraining #FunctionalRehab #NeurologicalRehab #PhysicalTherapyIdeas #OccupationalTherapyTips #WeightBearing #BrainstormingRehab #PTOTCollaboration

This patient is working on her ability to dual task- specifically with memory! . She has to read the numbers on the page left to right and reach for the corresponding number in the proper order. Not only does she have to remember where the numbers are placed around her, but she has to remember where her place on the paper was! . As an added bonus she is working on her core stability, coordination, trunk control, and it is task specific to her playing on the floor with her grandchildren. . #neuropt #pdrehab #neurorehab #taskspecifictraining #optimaltherapy #rehabilitation #physicaltherapy

🤩 Task-specific training post-stroke! I thought I’d share the “why” behind the set up of one intervention I performed with an individual. 💪 This individual wanted to return to hiking and getting rid of using his cane with all tasks! 🧠 River rocks for the hiking simulation, narrowed to work on reactive postural control challenges, use of hip strategies more. 🪜 hurdles for curb negotiation (he has difficulty clearing the feet) 🌱 Picking weeds is a salient task to him so we worked on forward bending, picking an item up and lateral stepping. (Picking items up is a vastly underrated task we don’t implement enough in rehab). 🥵 We also kicked butt for 35 min on the treadmill with his HR at ~75% of his calculated HR max. Incline up to 10%, decline up to 12% and flat with ankle weights and pushing speed! #taskspecifictraining #stroke #strokerehab #neurorehab #neurophysicaltherapy #physicaltherapy #balance #exercise #movementismedicine #walk #health #wellness #fitness #highintensityintervaltraining #highintensitytraining #evidencebasedmedicine

Sensory Training in FND: The Power of Novel Tasks

Sensory Training in FND: The Power of Novel Tasks
Bonus points for adding a little competition! Especially helpful for functional dystonia and functional movement disorders. I love this video because it highlights just how many sensory tools are being used - compression, a weighted vest, weight on the head AND a novel task! In this case, competition: don’t let the rings fall off, or see how many skip-its you can do in a row! So why do novel tasks work?
FND is what happens when the brain over relies on predictive processing — the brain relies too heavily on its own predictions and there is inaccurate feedback coming from the internal and external sensory systems. Introducing a novel task helps break that pattern, creating new opportunities for movement and updated sensory feedback. Want to start your FND learning journey? We have a free resource designed to help you understand your symptoms! Comment FND Guide down below and we will send it to you!

Here are 3 easy theraball exercises to perform and implement with your post stroke patients. 👉🏼Keep in mind that the patient should be seated on a safe surface with both hip/knees flexed at a 90 degree angle and the feet firmly planted on the floor. Exercise1️⃣: Allows the patient to move from a sit to stand position with hands placed on the theraball (unaffected UE supports the affected UE). This can be challenging as the patient does not have an arm rest to push off from and requires additional postural control to achieve the movement transition. Once standing, weight bearing is facilitated by pushing down on the theraball. The activity can also be used to increase body awareness and alignment. Exercise 2️⃣: Allows the patient to perform weight bearing on the affected shld/elb while weight shifting forward/laterally to reach for items with the unaffected UE. The activity can also be used to promote crossing midline and bilateral integration. Exercise 3️⃣: Allows the patient to support the affected UE with the unaffected UE while weight shifting forward/laterally. The activity can also be used to decrease stiffness and increase functional movement. 👉🏼The patients functional status will determine how much cuing the therapist provides. Manual cues should be at key points of control (shld/pelvic girdle). 👇🏼Drop a comment down below and share with us your experiences of using NDT in treatment! #occupationaltherapy #occupationaltherapist #occupationaltherapyassistant #occupationaltherapystudent #preot #neuro #neurorehab #strokeawareness #strokeawarenessmonth #rood #sensorimotorapproach #pnf #ndt #taskspecifictraining #mirrortherapy #contraintinducedmovementtherapy #skilledinterventions #ebp #evidencebasedpractice #neurorehabilitation #neurorehabilitationtechnique #neuromuscularreeducation

Task Specific Training🥊 . Task specific training focuses on improvement of performance in functional tasks through goal directed practice and repetition. The focus is on the TASK rather than the impairment (focusing on “boxing,” rather than strengthening the biceps and triceps) . This type of treatment approach used after a patient has had a stroke 🧠 to help with recovery of movement and neural pathways. 💡Neuro-plasticity! . Repetition alone, without usefulness or meaning in terms of function, is sometimes not enough to produce increased motor cortical pathways! Task oriented goals should be meaningful to the PATIENT! Evidence suggests that although a task may be relevant to the therapist, it has no value to the patient, and this can be counterproductive. ⭐️This is why it is SO important to ask your patient; what are YOUR goals, what do YOU want to work on to improve your function?⭐️ . Our patient LOVES to box, so what better way to get back to doing what he loves than to do just that!🥊 . What are we working on here⁉️ ✅Gross motor function ✅Upper limb strength ✅Reactivity ✅Core and head strength and control ✅Coordination ✅Cognitive function ✅Breaking abnormal movement patterns …to name a few! . #DoingMore #Montefiore #Bronx #Westchester #NewYork #NYC #AECOM #rehab #rehabilitation #PMR #physicaltherapy #occupationaltherapy #OT #PT #acutecare #acuterehab #outpatientrehab #taskspecific #motorlearning #motorlearningandcontrol #taskspecifictraining #neuroplasticity #neurorehab #neurorehabilitation

Nerves heal slowly. But the nervous system adapts when it is trained specifically, progressively, and consistently. 🧠✨ This is 12 weeks of structured Neuro Rehab. We progressed from: • Assisted shoulder activation & proximal stability to → Bimanual task training → Controlled grip strengthening → Fine motor retraining → Task-specific practice In neuropathic conditions, recovery requires repetitive, goal-directed practice that translates into everyday life. Today she can: ✨ Drink water without support ✨ Comb her hair ✨ Get ready on her own ✨ Chop vegetables independently Not just improved hand movement. Improved participation. Greater confidence. Greater autonomy. 🤍 Progress may be gradual, but it is powerful💪 #physiotherapy #neurorehab #handrehabilitation #patientjourney #neuropathy
