The dreaded first page of a pristine (and sometimes expensive!) new sketchbook. I’m forever teaching myself new ways to get over my fear of failure, to get over perfectionism… basically- to get over myself! Do you ever observe how young children create? They grab a paper, slap it on the nearest surface, and get to work. They don’t obsess, self-doubt, or overthink. This act of “ruining” the first page of a sketchbook is a tip I learned from a friend years ago. It takes the power away from the material. It says: “whatever I make can’t ever be worse than this, so now I’m free to begin.” Here are three other ways I shift from Overthinking Mode to Doing Mode: 1.) I use the cheapest materials I can find, usually my kids’ crayons and the nearest scraps of printer paper. 2.) I set a timer and commit to doodling, even if it’s literally for five minutes. 3.) i sketch quickly, and hold my pencil loosely. Messy, loose sketches tap into a different part of me. Extra points for putting on music that totally inspires you. Would you try this? Do you have any other tips for becoming less precious with your process? Let me know in the comments!

The secret to a successful art career isn’t expensive supplies or a fancy studio. It’s a sketchbook. A place to practice, experiment, and play without pressure. That’s where you learn to trust your intuition and remember how to be free. And when you’re free, stronger art follows. Your sketchbook isn’t just practice. It’s where your work and your career get built, one mark at a time.

For years I collected art books. I’d flip them through but nothing ever clicked until I started using this method. Self taught artists need all the help they can get no doubt 🤣. . . . #arttips #learnart #drawingpractice #artistsoninstagram #selftaughtartist

As a 50-year-old who’s been drawing for decades, I still can’t believe that… 1. You have to be talented to draw. No. Drawing isn’t a gift, it’s a practice. The more you draw, the more you grow. 2. A good drawing means a realistic drawing. Not true. A sketchbook isn’t meant to be a gallery of perfect, polished images. It can be loose, messy, expressive, playful. Realism is only one way of seeing - not the only way. 3. It’s too late to start. This is my favourite myth to bust. My mum, who is 79, joined my Sketch Squad to take part in my new book ‘Sketch’ (out this January!) - and she took up drawing for the very first time. Proof that it’s never, ever too late. ✨ I really believe drawing is for everyone. Imperfect, joyful, experimental, real. Do this post as a reminder - or share it with someone who needs the encouragement to begin 🤩 Ps - this footage is from the wonderful reel @emmataylorfilms made for me in the summer. It’s pinned to the top of my grid if you would like to watch it. #drawingpractice #sketchbookinspiration #everyonecandraw #drawingcoach #sketchbookcommunity #drawdaily #artpractice #creativejourney #sketchbookideas #drawingispractice #sketchbooklove #creativecoaching #sketchbookwork #dailyartpractice #sketchbookpage
