Blondy has passed away just one year after group member Angie Stone 🙏🏽🕊 'The Sequence' helped lay the foundation for women in hip-hop. The trio was named "The Sequence" because the members' heights and birthdays all occurred in an ascending sequence. Even their voices flowed one after another in rhythm. In 1979, The Sequence, an American female hip-hop trio from Columbia, South Carolina, was the first female hip hop trio signed to the Sugar Hill Records label. The group consisted of Cheryl Cook, known as “Cheryl The Pearl”, Gwendolyn Chisolm, known as “Blondy”, and Angie Stone, known as Angie B, who were all high school friends. Angie Stone, who performed as Angie B in the pioneering female rap trio The Sequence in the late 1970s, and later found success as a soulful R&B singer-songwriter with hits including “No More Rain (In This Cloud),” “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” and “Brotha,” died in an automobile accident early Saturday. She was 63.   Born Angela Laverne Brown in Columbia, South Carolina, she joined with Cheryl “Cheryl the Pearl” Cook and Gwendolyn “Blondy” Chisolm as Angie B to form The Sequence—the first female rap group signed to the seminal Sugar Hill Records label in 1979. Also the first Southern rap act, The Sequence released “Funk You Up” that winter, a signature hit sampled decades later in songs from Dr. Dre, Erykah Badu and others.   Over her 46-year career, Angie Stone was nominated for three Grammy Awards, releasing 10 studio albums including Black Diamond and Mahogany Soul. After serving as a songwriter and backup singer for Lenny Kravitz, Mary J. Blige and D’Angelo (the father of her son, Michael D’Angelo Archer II), Stone segued into her successful solo career in the neo-soul movement of the 1990s. “I really love that live vibe; I ain’t really trying to be like nobody, just myself,” she told The Hip Hop Museum historian Miles Marshall Lewis in 1999. Stone sang her final live performance headlining the 2025 Grand Marshal’s Ball in Mobile, Alabama, the night before her fatal car accident.   The Hip Hop Museum mourns the loss of Angie Stone as one of the cornerstones of Hip Hop culture, helping pave the way for expressions of women in rap music.   Video edits by @jefword. Whenever you called on me, I was there. Whenever I called on you, you were there. So many tough talks, gut laughs, sad and happy tears, putting family in music videos, and lots of singing… you guys would laugh so hard when I sang. ANGIE!!! I was a super fan first, and when we both moved to Atlanta, we met and it was sisters at first hug!!! I LOVE you Angie, my heart is heavy and my tears are pouring, but I’m thankful we are forever sisters, who shared and loved on each other, and reminded each other often, “You are the gift!” Selfishly I hate that you’re not physically here, but I know that you’ll never leave us who love you.
