A third place is somewhere outside of home or work where people can go to be around each other, and connect with their community. It’s a casual place, and cost shouldn’t keep anyone from being there. It’s a place where people come together and strangers can become friends. But since Covid, third places are on the decline. Technology has made it so easy to do everything straight from our houses. We can get food delivered to our door, and we text friends from our couch. We watch acquaintances’ lives through our social feeds instead of connecting in person. Let’s take care of our third places—organize events, keep them clean, and keep showing up 🌿 • • • • • • • • #thirdplaces #community #communityspaces #smallbusiness #nyc #charlestonsc #reels #reelsinstagram #reelsinsta

I genuinely think the third place is something that’s lacking in a lot of people’s lives. Although there are places like coffee shops, malls, etc.. You typically have to spend money, which sort of defeats the meaning of a third place. But maybe the real third place was the friends we made along the way. What’s your third place? #homecafe #thirdplaces

ETA: I should clarify that third spaces and the commons are not the same concept, and I’m not arguing one should replace the other. The commons was meant to be an example that collective resource management and sharing is possible. I’ll also admit saying NO spaces with paid admission can be a third space was too absolute. What I mean is that in today’s conditions, most private spaces (esp F&B) inevitably struggle to function as a third space due to price barriers, time restrictions, etc. Hence why we need to be all the more vigilant about protecting and investing in public spaces whose entire objective is to offer accessible community building. — The term “third space” was coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg to describe informal gathering spaces outside of home and work. Yes, he included certain commercial spaces in his original assessment, but later wrote that cost should not be a deciding factor of who could be part of the space. Oldenburg also described chain establishments as “less hardy” than other spaces. Unsurprisingly, when Starbucks asked him to endorse them as a third space (LOL), he said no. #thirdspace #socialcommentary #foodpolitics #publicinfrastructure #communitybuilding
