Bruh this is definitely not what I originally set out to make! I was trying to build a vase with a hole through the center, but I fell asleep and let the clay dry out way too much. 😭 Instead of scrapping it, I figured, why not use it to practice my carving? Let me know what you guys think of the details! #pottery #potterylove #potteryart #ceramics #potterystudio

In my YouTube video this weekend I’m recreating some pots I haven’t thrown since 2014, specially store jars with inset, internal galleries and thin lids with thrown knobs. You can find a link to the fully narrated video via the Linktree in my profile’s biography. I’ve lied a little bit. I did create jars that were similar to this during my apprenticeship with Lisa Hammond between 2014-2017, yet they were bellied pieces with a gallery closer to the jars I make these days, yet they unusual thrown knobs that were in themselves similar to small bowls. To create pots with internal galleries like this you need to split the rim. One section becomes the lip, the other is coaxed inside and carefully set horizontal to essentially become a ledge onto which the lid can be held aloft. This alone is a tricky task and it involves throwing a form with enough material in the lip to withstand such a manoeuvre. Secondly, there’s the small disc-like lid, a form that’s thrown off-the-hump and then the following day it’s trimmed back to have its more exacting shape and the knob is thrown on, again, a tricky task as it involves fiddly, fingertip throwing and a lot of accuracy. All of this and more will be covered in my longer, narrated YouTube upload. I enjoyed making these and since it has been such a long time since I’ve crafted them, my skillset in the interim has improved massively, thus I could apply newly learnt techniques and ability into making shapes I used to struggle with to some degree. I hope you like the film if you happen to click over and watch it, it’s greatly appreciated if you do as it helps to keep the lights on in the workshop. #pottery #ceramics #handmade #jar #satisfying

I’ve been working with this form for about five years now and I’m excited to see different explorations and iterations from lots of artists. I’m excited about playing with form and pushing the limits of clay. So thankful for the plastic clay body’s we have access to these days 🙏🏾 I appreciate @clayandconsciousness for the initial inspiration as well as @joshnmndeweese for his wonderful spiraled pots 🌀 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #porcelain #teabowl #contemporaryart #contemporarycraft #contemporaryceramics #clay #pottery #woodfiredpottery #woodfiredceramics #wheelthrownpottery #processvideo #ceramicprocess #pottersofinstagram #atmosphericpottery #thrownandaltered #tea #wabisabi #teawares #teawareaddict #teaware #tealover #matcha #chawan

Spending a lot of time centering, only to throw everything off-center again while opening or pulling walls, is a common problem for beginners. This is a quick tip to help you fix that issue. When opening, do it in a confident, controlled motion. I made a video about this earlier. While proper centering is essential, I usually recommend that beginners just start opening eventually and practise pulling walls. Otherwise, you spend weeks only centering, ruining the fun and never practicing the later stages. And while a perfectly centered lump of clay makes every following step easier, centering never truly stops. You can throw your clay off-center at any stage of the process, so it’s crucial to know how to re-center the clay at any point along the way. #pottery #ceramicart #wheelthrowing #ceramics #potterystudio #clay #potterywheel

Throwing a wide bowl with around 1.2 kilos maybe! Can’t remember exactly 🙈 but I love using these kidneys because they make it so much easier to get a beautiful bowl shape! And quickly 🧡 I hope to make it into a yarn bowl- but maybe it should have been bigger- this is 19cm wide! • • • #pottery #ceramics #handmade #instapottery #clay #wheelthrown #potteryofinstagram #stoneware #bowl #mudtools

Here’s a step-by-step demo of how to throw a basic cylinder — a simple recap for our beginning wheel students who are learning the fundamentals. This video is shown in real time with no edits, so you can see the natural pace of the process just as we practice it in class. There are many ways to approach wheel throwing, and in this demo we share a few of the techniques we use with beginners. Of course, there’s so much more that goes into throwing successfully — from body positioning to the controlled pressure of your hands on the clay to the speed of the wheel — that can’t fully be shown in a short video. That’s why learning in person makes such a difference! If you’ve been curious about trying pottery yourself, this is a great place to start! Most of our classes are designed for beginners, and we’d love to welcome you into the studio.
