A part of my life’s work now, is preaching the gospel of microlocs. 😂 I’m determined to find 50 reasons why Black women should consider this style. Reason 2: You’ll never have another bad hair day. My hair always looks good. On the days I feel my hair is flat or my roots have grown in too much, I receive compliments that remind me to appreciate the beauty of my locs in all of its stages. I’ve always felt my best and most confident on “good” hair days. Now I have them every single day. My ends are currently left out. Many of my locs in the back, particularly in the nape area, have fully loc’d from root to end. However, most of the locs on the sides and top are still loose—partly because I detangle my ends on wash days every 2-3 weeks and partly due to my hair texture. I have a looser texture at the top and front of my head, making it easy to detangle. In fact, I can usually detangle with just my fingers—it’s that fine. But the back? Now, that’s a different story. Shrinkage can be shocking Your hair may look much shorter after install, especially on coils or kinky textures. 3. Frizz is part of the journey Early-stage Microlocs are frizz-prone, especially after washing. Frizz ≠ messy—it means locking is happening. 4. Your scalp will be very visible initially Because of clean parting and tiny locs, the scalp shows more at first. This softens as locs thicken. 5. They require patience, not manipulation Over-styling, constant reties, or heavy products can slow locking or cause thinning. 6. Budding feels strange You’ll feel hard knots or bumps along the locs (budding stage). It’s normal and temporary. 7. Installation choice affects everything Braids, twists, or interlock change the look, timeline, and maintenance needs—not just the install day. 8. Water is your best friend Unlike loose hair, Microlocs thrive with regular washing, even early on. 9. You may miss your loose hair… briefly It’s common to feel unsure in the first weeks. Confidence usually grows as the locs mature. 10.
