Tomato Pruning Drama😱 When I first started gardening, I didn’t prune my tomatoes at all. Then I started to follow all the rules and pruned all the suckers. The first way resulted in just leaves. The second resulted in just a few fruit. I figured out a better way-prune the leaves but leave the suckers. This meant all the energy goes to more fruit and each sucker will produce fruit with enough time. If you want BIGGER tomatoes, prune the suckers. But if you want MORE tomatoes, prune the leaves. After I figured this out, I get SOOO many tomatoes, and so can you! The key is to leave the suckers and prune the leafy branches. Prune like this about once a week. And remember, only trim the bottom third so your plant still has plenty of shade on top. Have you planted your tomatoes yet? Comment TRELLIS to find the perfect trellis for your tomatoes this summer. There’s going to be so many! 🍅🍅🍅

How I prune my tomato plants🍅🌱✂️ If you are growing indeterminate tomatoes, it is best to prune them to limit the amount of growing laterals. The primary reason for pruning is to keep the plant manageable and to promote airflow and sunlight around the plant to help mitigate against diseases such as blight and mildew. My preference is to establish a triple stem plant, this method encourages 3 growing stems that I can tie back and manage on a single stake. Three stems also gives me a consistent yield across the growing season. It’s all about finding a balance that works with the space available in your garden. If space is a premium, you may find a single or double stem is appropriate, I have seen great results with either method. Just remember though, the more laterals that are left on the plants the footprint becomes larger because each lateral has the potential to produce its own additional suckers and multiply fast. The plants can become monsters and become difficult to support. Some gardeners prefer to use tomato cages and prune suckers sparingly. This is another great technique, particularly if you’re not a fan of pruning and prefer lower maintenance plants. The bottom line is, don’t be afraid to prune your plants. Experiment each season, you can’t kill your plants by pruning them because there will always be another sucker that develops as the plant matures. ✂️ Tomato Pruning 101 🍅 Taking off suckers so your plant can focus on fruit, not foliage. It’s not necessary for every plant, so the first step is determining your type. Once you’ve done that, the rest is simple! Find those suckers and cut ‘em off! Then remove any leaves touching the soil to help reduce disease and pests. Caring for tomatoes is a bit like parenting… you gotta knock off the bad habits before they become permanent. Except with tomatoes there’s more salsa potential. #tomatotips #homesteadhacks #pruning #tomato #fruit #plant #plants #garden #gardening #gardener #101 #educational #helpful #funfacts #tomatoes #suckers #prune #food #growyourownfood #plantsofinsta #TheShilohFarm
