Tomato Pruning Drama😱 When I first started gardening, I didn’t prune my tomatoes at all. Then I started to follow all the rules and pruned all the suckers. The first way resulted in just leaves. The second resulted in just a few fruit. I figured out a better way-prune the leaves but leave the suckers. This meant all the energy goes to more fruit and each sucker will produce fruit with enough time. If you want BIGGER tomatoes, prune the suckers. But if you want MORE tomatoes, prune the leaves. After I figured this out, I get SOOO many tomatoes, and so can you! The key is to leave the suckers and prune the leafy branches. Prune like this about once a week. And remember, only trim the bottom third so your plant still has plenty of shade on top. Have you planted your tomatoes yet? Comment TRELLIS to find the perfect trellis for your tomatoes this summer. There’s going to be so many! 🍅🍅🍅

Here’s how I prune my indeterminate tomato plants to keep them healthy and productive 🍅 Main stem – This is the backbone of the plant. All the fruiting branches grow from here. Leaves – These help the plant photosynthesize. I trim the lower ones once they touch the soil to help prevent disease. Leaf head – This is the growing tip at the top. It keeps the plant vining upward — don’t prune it unless you’re topping the plant at the end of the season. Suckers – These grow in the joint between the main stem and a leaf. I remove them so the plant focuses on growing fruit, not more leaves. Final tip — pinch or snip suckers early, it’s gentler on the plant and keeps growth under control. Regular pruning = better airflow, less disease, and more tomatoes! Pruning for healthy Tomato plants! 🌱🍅 Firstly, not all types of tomatoes need to be pruned. If you are growing ‘determinate’ or bush tomato plants there is no need to prune them. They grow to a fixed mature size and generally ripen all of their fruit within a few weeks. ‘Indeterminate’ tomatoes - like the one I’m pruning above - do not have a fixed mature size, but continue to grow throughout the season, and grow into very large vines. Many of the most popular tomato varieties are generally indeterminate. Although pruning is not essential for indeterminate tomatoes, as the plant will still produce fruit if left to its own devices, pruning away the suckers (or side shoots) and removing yellowed or low hanging leaves encourages healthy fruit production and prevents plant diseases. When a tomato plant is pruned properly, this increases airflow around the plants and all of the foliage then receives adequate sunlight. The plant is therefore able to photosynthesize more efficiently, boosting growth and fruit production. TOP TIP! 🌱 The suckers that are pruned away can also be rooted in water and then planted, producing a duplicate of the tomato plant it was taken from. I would also suggest removing the first fruiting truss that forms to allow the plant to focus on growing before it redirects its energy towards fruit production. I then train my plants up twine in the ploy tunnel but a bamboo cane or something similar will do just fine too. #tomatoes #tomatotuesday #tomatoplant #plantcare #plantcaretips #pruning #organictomatoes #growyourown #homegrowing #urbanfoodgrowing #vegpatch #allotment #gardeningtipsforbeginners #gardeningtips #organicgardening #vegetablegardening #nodiggarden #polytunnelgrowing #growingtomatoes

Comment SNIP for more information on how I prune my tomato plants. I didn’t want to overcomplicate my video but Dwarf tomatoes are another variety that I prune the same as determinate varieties. One of the factors that may impact how you want to prune is your humidity level. If you live in a very humid environment, airflow may be more important to avoid certain fungal diseases. Another consideration is how densely you spaced your tomatoes and your trellis setup. For example I prune my indeterminate tomatoes more aggressively in my steel beds because I only plant them one foot apart. Densely pruning the bottom of indeterminate varieties (e.g. 1 foot instead of a couple inches) may open up interplanting opportunities. Also, Florida weave would more easily allow for bushy tomatoes than a string trellis. Note that sometimes it is advantageous to leave certain leaves to provide shade for the fruit and avoid sunscald. Finally, it is generally best to prune gradually when you know the plant size can support losing the amount you prune. #smallspacegardening #tinygarden #tomatoes

Cut the 💩. This is how to prune tomatoes. 🌱✂️🍅 Comment “TOMATO” to get even more growing tips sent via DM. There may not be one way, but there are right and wrong things to do with trimming plants. And the more on top of it you are, the earlier you’ll have homegrown tomatoes and the more of them to enjoy. Pruning Tomato Plants 🍅🌱✂️ Pruning helps to grow a more manageable and healthier plant, it increases harvests and in the case of tomatoes, can supply you with lots of new duplicate plants! 😊🙌🏻🍅 Firstly, it is important to determine if the plant actually needs pruning at all! So, is it an indeterminate vining variety that would be pruned to a single tall stem and trellised to grow upwards almost indefinitely in the right conditions, or a determinate bush variety that can just be left to grow to its determined size, although I would still remove the yellowing lower leaves of even determinate varieties too. Most seed packs or plant labels should specify, if not, just search the variety online. 😊 If it’s indeterminate, I will begin to prune them a couple of weeks after planting and I start by removing any lower leaves that are touching the soil and that are therefore more susceptible to issues such as mildew. 😬 Then I prune the side shoots which grow at a 45 degree angle in the axel of the plant between the main stem and the leaves, larger with snips and smaller with fingers. 🌱 I remove them all the way up the plant, but always leave the growing point to continue to grow. 😊👍🏻 The side shoots could then be rooted in water, creating a duplicate of the original plant. 🌱🌱🌱 I then just keep training the plant up the twine support as it grows. If the plant has developed two main stems, both could be trained up separate supports, or just prune one away and pop it in water as that will create a nice new plant. 😊🌱 So if you’re growing tomatoes I hope that was useful, and let me know which varieties you’re growing this year? 😊🍅 #gardeningtips #tomatoplant #vegetablegarden

How I prune my tomato plants🍅🌱✂️ If you are growing indeterminate tomatoes, it is best to prune them to limit the amount of growing laterals. The primary reason for pruning is to keep the plant manageable and to promote airflow and sunlight around the plant to help mitigate against diseases such as blight and mildew. My preference is to establish a triple stem plant, this method encourages 3 growing stems that I can tie back and manage on a single stake. Three stems also gives me a consistent yield across the growing season. It’s all about finding a balance that works with the space available in your garden. If space is a premium, you may find a single or double stem is appropriate, I have seen great results with either method. Just remember though, the more laterals that are left on the plants the footprint becomes larger because each lateral has the potential to produce its own additional suckers and multiply fast. The plants can become monsters and become difficult to support. Some gardeners prefer to use tomato cages and prune suckers sparingly. This is another great technique, particularly if you’re not a fan of pruning and prefer lower maintenance plants. The bottom line is, don’t be afraid to prune your plants. Experiment each season, you can’t kill your plants by pruning them because there will always be another sucker that develops as the plant matures. I hope this video helps, feel free to drop any questions below. ✂️ Tomato Pruning 101 🍅 Taking off suckers so your plant can focus on fruit, not foliage. It’s not necessary for every plant, so the first step is determining your type. Once you’ve done that, the rest is simple! Find those suckers and cut ‘em off! Then remove any leaves touching the soil to help reduce disease and pests. Caring for tomatoes is a bit like parenting… you gotta knock off the bad habits before they become permanent. Except with tomatoes there’s more salsa potential. #tomatotips #homesteadhacks #pruning #tomato #fruit #plant #plants #garden #gardening #gardener #101 #educational #helpful #funfacts #tomatoes #suckers #prune #food #growyourownfood #plantsofinsta #TheShilohFarm
