You don’t have to use the word “stay”! It needlessly complicates things for your dog. Instead just clearly define the start and end point of your positions so that it’s an implied stay! Much more reliable and clear for your dog! #dogtrainingtips #dogtrainingadvice

You don’t need hours to start building obedience. You just need the right steps. Break command, guide the dog, use elevation for focus, then build distance and duration on the sit-stay. 5 commands to teach your dog today Here’s a breakdown of 5 commands I believe every dog should know — and why they matter. ✅ 1. Sit It sounds obvious, but a solid sit is one of the most useful commands. Sit to greet visitors calmly Sit while waiting in queues Sit before crossing roads Sit as impulse control before food, games, or doorways ✅ 2. Down Everything above applies to “down” too — but it’s even more useful for relaxing. Use it at coffee shops, pub gardens, or parks Helps your dog switch off and chill Builds calmness and stillness ✅ 3. Place / Bed A command to send your dog to their bed or mat. Perfect for managing them at home Useful when guests or tradespeople visit Helps them settle while you eat or relax ✅ 4. Free / Release This ends the sit, down or place command. The dog stays in position until released Adds control and structure to every session Can also be used to safely exit the car or walk through doors ✅ 5. Out / Drop A must-have for safety and everyday life. For dropping things they shouldn’t have For letting go during play Can literally be a life-saver 🔹Want help teaching these? People are always asking me ‘what is the most important thing I should teach my teenage dog?’🤔 And yes, it’s a valid question but a lot of the time it’s not MORE training that dogs need, it actually boils down to the fundamentals😅 With your teenage dog, you want to be prioritising: 🔹Building a strong bond 🔹Proper breed-specific enrichment 🔹Minimising frustration levels If you want to learn all about these things, hit follow, I’ve got lots to offer☺️ #adolescentdog #teenagedogproblems #dogownerproblems #dogownerlife #dogtrainingtips

The most common command is also taught wrong most of the time. Many people associate Stay with a very pronounced hand and body gesture that makes it basically impossible to do anything else than maintain the Stay. Teaching it in this way has nearly 0 real benefits … because in most situations where you need your dog to stay you also want to do something with your hands (like pick up poop or tie your shoe). That’s why I teach this behavior independently of hand gestures right from the start. Instead of teaching the dog that the our hand is relevant, I make many little movements, and reward them in position. If you are generous in your reboarding, then you can actually advance this really quickly. Bonus points if your dog will also stay when you do a cartwheel like mine 😁😁

How to teach your dog “wait” 🐾 You can teach this at any age — it’s never too late. Start simple. Ask for “wait” from a very short distance for a very short amount of time. Then slowly increase the time and the distance as they start to understand the behavior. If they break position before you give the release word, that’s okay. Just go back to a shorter time or closer distance and build it back up. Progression is everything with this one. And don’t forget a clear release word (we use “okay”) so they know exactly when they’re free.
