Stop whistle training starts in the kitchen… not the field. If you wait until your dog is running flat out, you’re not teaching it…You’re testing it. And that’s where the ignored whistles and frustration creep in, which then leads to a negative association with the whistle cue. In the clip with Maola, these are the first 3 ways I teach the stop whistle from day one & all have a positive association with the whistle. Calm. Simple. Clear. Here’s what we’re doing: • Whistle + lift the food bowl = sit • Whistle = food delivered on the floor (distraction to then reset the whistle cue) • Add distance → send to the bowl, whistle - pause-feed… the bowl is an anchor to help teach them a place where I’d like them to stop. Nothing fancy. Just building meaning. After several repetitions over months, your dog will soon learn that when they hear the stop whistle (beeeep), it’s followed by a reward. The whistle soon becomes “it’s good to stop what you’re doing”, not “I may slow down,” as it’s followed by a positive outcome, such as a retrieve, a cue to continue to hunt, etc. Quiet reps now become your breaks for later. Start in the kitchen and build reliability and fluency, then move it to the garden… And then move to different environments. So when you finally get to the field… It’s already an automatic positive response. . . . . W H I S T L E To me, having a consistent whistle noise is lovely, and I know he will hear it should we be some distance from each other. You could just whistle yourself, but then if someone else walks your dog, can they do the same whistle!? I have conditioned a fast and fantastic recall to this whistle. He comes flying like this with a 99% success rate (because I always made sure he did, for months and months). I also use a "come" cue and a normal little whistle melody. Blow the whistle 3 times and then feed them three times. Stand next to your dog and expect nothing. 3. Stage 2 is blow three times then jog backwards and reward three times as they get to you. 3.
