Big day at Venture Lab’s Startup Challenge at the University of Pennsylvania! Cloak has taken home the $75,000 Perlman Grand Prize at Venture Lab’s annual Startup Challenge. Founded by Penn students, Rishi Ambavanekar, The Wharton School and School of Engineering and Applied Science 2029, and Tyler Sacharow, School of Arts & Sciences 2029, Cloak works with publishers, ranging from news to novels to screenplays, to protect content against AI scraping. Their algorithm offers either full protection or opt-in monetization of training & inference. For online publishers, this creates a major opportunity to block or monetize AI activity. Selected from 100+ ventures and 8 finalist teams, founders pitched live at Tangen Hall in front of alumni judges and a packed audience. In total, over $200,000 in cash prizes and in-kind support were awarded to student-founded ventures building across industries. Additional awards: William G. Simpson & R. Drew Kistler Award ($50K) // Serpent Robotics // Founded by class of 2026 Penn students, Margaret Zhu, The Wharton School, Kevin Xuan, School of Engineering and Applied Science, Jason Li, School of Engineering and Applied Science, Steyn Knollema, School of Engineering and Applied Science, Serpent Robotics is developing a robotic tree branch-cutting system that enables tree care professionals to perform risky cuts remotely, aiming to reduce injuries, fatalities, and equipment damage while increasing precision and operational efficiency. Linn Family Innovation Prize ($10K) - Orble // Founded by Penn student Corina Chen, The Wharton School and the School of Engineering and Applied Science, 2028, and Penn alumnus Nastassja Kuznetsova, School of Engineering and Applied Science, 2024, Orble is a robotic micro-kitchen that prepares fresh, customizable beverages like boba and coffee on demand, 24/7. By automating full café workflows in a compact system, it eliminates labor and space constraints, bringing premium food and drink anywhere. Want a home lab but don’t have the space? Here are five digital lab environments you can use to build skills without needing any physical gear. Each one has tradeoffs, so let’s break it down: 1. Cisco Modeling Labs (CML) CML is a simulation platform built by Cisco that runs real Cisco IOS images in a virtual environment. Best for when you want realistic behavior and access to full Cisco command sets. 2. Cisco Packet Tracer Packet Tracer is a free network simulator designed primarily for entry-level certification prep, like CCNA. It doesn’t emulate full IOS behavior, but it’s really good for building basic networks, and practicing CLI skills. 3. GNS3 (Graphical Network Simulator 3) GNS3 is a popular open-source platform that supports multiple vendors like Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto, and more. It’s great for intermediate to advanced users who want to simulate real environments or mix multi-vendor labs. 4. EVE-NG (Emulated Virtual Environment - Next Gen) EVE-NG is a powerful emulation platform similar to GNS3, but better suited for larger lab designs. It supports a wide range of vendor images and allows for complex topologies, including enterprise-level sims. 5. CloudMyLab CloudMyLab provides hosted lab environments that you can book and access remotely. This is useful if your local computer isn’t powerful enough for emulators. It includes prebuilt topologies and access to both virtual and real equipment, depending on the lab type. Bonus: Cisco DevNet Sandboxes These are cloud-hosted, on-demand labs provided by Cisco for free. They focus on automation, APIs, programmability, and software-defined networking. Some sandboxes use real gear; others are fully virtual. Labs are time-limited and require scheduling in advance. Whether you’re just starting out or building advanced networks, there’s a digital lab solution for you! You don’t need a whole rack of gear to build your skills - you just need the right platform.
