Why were we so excited to pick up this torn and tattered Wassily chair by Marcel Breuer? The chair came out of a home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It’s a city with a rich history of modernism back in the 1950s and 1960s, including the Alan Frank House designed with Walter Gropius. While the Wassily chair is more typically seen in leather, canvas was also a material offered on the chair, which we have learned to covet. This example retains an original Knoll label with 320 Park Avenue noted, indicating 1960s production. A rare and collectible duo of “Wassily” daybeds, designed by Marcel Breuer in the 1920s and produced in the 1970s. Crafted with Breuer’s signature Bauhaus sensibility, each bed features a sleek tubular steel frame paired with distinctive cowhide leather banding - an iconic material combination that defined modernist design.
