How we reduce bagged dog poo in landfill and use composting worms to create organic fertiliser for the garden 💩🪱🌳 - Further info/explanation - The dog poo worm farm is separate from our household waste/food scraps worm farms and this particular worm farm is only fed the dog poo and occasionally grass clippings. When the sole diet of the worms is dog poo, they consume it quickly and it’s gone in just a few days. The dog poo worm farm doesn’t smell or attract flies - so long as there is enough moisture and you don’t overload it with too much dog poo for the worms to keep up with. Even I was sceptic about the “no smell” at first but it seriously doesn’t smell at all! The only time I don’t add dog poo to the worm farm is within a week after Hugo’s deworming treatment. The worm castings can be used to fertilise ornamental, non-edible, non-fruiting plants. Never use it on or near edibles, vegetable gardens or fruit trees. I also don’t spread the castings anywhere in the backyard or garden beds where we/Hugo walk - just personal preference because we want to avoid it getting tracked through the house 🐾 I know this is not for everyone and that’s 💯ok! Our red wiggler worms don’t eat too much in the winter but they get really hungry and active as the days warm. A few worm bins handle the majority of our kitchen waste and they turn the refuse into black gold. We sift out the worm castings a few times each year and either make compost tea or put the castings directly into the garden. ✨ It’s super-easy to build a worm bin and you can even get your worms delivered by mail. The best part about composting with worms is how compact it is. It doesn’t need lots of space . No turning, all you have to do it feed them and they do all the hard work turning all the food into compost for your garden! I am super excited to start my mini worm farm. 🪱

Make a wormery by recycling two old buckets. Wormeries are ideal if you do not have space for a compost. Worms will break down your kitchen waste and convert it into free compost to use on the garden. You can also collect a liquid in the bottom container to use as a rich, liquid plant food if diluted at 1 part to 10 parts water. This liquid is often called ‘worm tea’. Or, I’ve called it worm juice! Make sure the top container where the worms live has lots of holes for air circulation for the worms. Do not use earthworms. Earthworms need much deeper soil. And they don’t feed on kitchen waste. Instead use compost worms, such as red tiger worms). Or European night crawler worms which thrive in shallow compost. I bought mine from a fishing bait shop in Brixham, Devon near where I live. You can buy compost worms online. Also, avoid Canadian night crawler worms You can also find these compost worms under stones or in compost. Keep wormery at temp between 5 and 20 degrees in shade. If kept outside, place in shed over winter or insulate. Do not drill holes in lid if keeping outside as it willfil with rain. Just drill base of top container and sides. Feed worms fruit and veg scraps. Avoid dairy, meat, citrus, onion etc. If material feels dry, water slightly as worms prefer slighly moist conditions.
