One question we get asked a lot with our Artificial Reef deployments is ‘Why don’t you build them on land and drop them in?’ ❓ Because they’re heavy! As you can see, each module is either 5 or 20kg…and, when one reef can use 20+ modules, that’s not so easy to move around*. Our new MegaMars structure has around 90 individual modules, weighing in at around 1160kg 💪 So why don’t we get a rig to lower it down? We’re on a remote island! The resources that would go into getting a rig shipped here, getting a new, bigger boat to accommodate it, and training people to use it, would be much better being put directly back into the conservation efforts 🪸 Our AR drop dives are a volunteer favourite. I Know it's just two months in, but damn this looks so good, it gives me so much hope. 🤩 Reef stars are one of the artificial reef structures that designed to restore damaged coral reefs by stabilizing loose rubble and creating a solid surface where corals can attach and grow. Neptune Reef — the true homeland of barracudas. Here they make up the majority of all fish on this artificial reef, at least by sheer mass. Nowhere else in Florida have I seen barracudas this big and in such huge numbers — not on wrecks, not on reefs, not under piers. It’s a protected zone, and no fishing or spearfishing is allowed. That’s why the fish feel calm, confident, and even curious. Our presence doesn’t scare them — they come close on their own. You’re looking at the world’s largest artificial reef. Or at least it soon will be. The historic SS United States was once considered the world’s fastest ship in the 1950s. Now it’ll have a new home underwater. The former ocean liner is headed to Mobile, Alabama, where it’ll be cleaned up before its eventual final destination off Destin-Fort Walton Beach in Florida.
