OFF-CAMERA FLASH (OCF) OCF gives you artistic control over the direction of your light source, giving images a more distinct, intentional feeling and giving you, the artist, more freedom to create! GEAR NEEDED: ✨A speed light (ideally with a built-in receiver) ✨A transmitter that’s compatible with your flash/receiver ✨A receiver (if your flash doesn’t have one built in) THE SETUP: 1️⃣Set your transmitter to any channel and group and attach it to your hot shoe 2️⃣Match your receiver/speed light to the same channel and group 3️⃣Attach your speed light to a monopod or handle grip for height & directional control CAMERA, LENS, & FLASH SETTINGS 📸: 1️⃣ Set your shutter and ISO. To include ambient room light, set the shutter between 1/40–1/100 and ISO to about 400. 2️⃣ Set your aperture to match your desired depth of field. With flash, I love f/6.3. 3️⃣ Leave those alone now. Don’t freaking touch them. Use flash to compensate from here. 4️⃣Set your flash to manual mode and don’t panic🫢 On your transmitter (or speed light if your transmitter doesn’t have a screen) set your flash strength. This varies wildly depending on the room and what direction you’re pointing the flash. 5️⃣Aim the flash at your subject, test out different angles and distances, and take control of your flash style! ‼️Note About Flash Strength:‼️ The lowest strength is 1/128; the brightest is 1/1. If your flash strength has to be high (1/4+) to light up your subject, open up your aperture more and raise your ISO a little. The hotter you’re running your flash, the faster the battery life drains and the longer it takes to recharge, meaning you’ll get more frequent misfires. ✨It feels intimating at first, but once you get the hang of it, OCF is a reliable, quick, and easy tool to elevate your wedding photos!

How I elevated my flash photos instantly 📸✨ Instead of mounting my flash on camera, I use a trigger and hold the flash up high to create softer shadows, natural depth, and a more editorial look. This simple lighting change takes flash photography from harsh to cinematic perfect for weddings, receptions, and low-light moments. If you want your flash photos to look intentional, artistic, and magazine-worthy, this is the easiest upgrade to your workflow. ✨ off-camera flash technique ✨ wedding flash photography tips ✨ how to use flash trigger ✨ editorial wedding photography lighting ✨ flash photography for photographers

Learn FLASH ⚡️ for the dance floor. Mirrorless cameras can’t show you exactly what your image will look like when your flash goes off, so it’s best to look at the ambient light and the flash output as two separate things. Start by turning off your flash and reviewing the back of your camera. Set your speed to 1/8 if you want that dragged light look, or go with something faster like 1/200 if you prefer everything to be still and sharp. Next, set your aperture to around 4-5.6 so that everyone is in focus and sharp. Finally, change your ISO to setup how much ambient light you want. If you want dragged light, then increase that ISO until you can clearly see the lights you want to expose for, or if you want the background to be completely dark, lower that ISO. To make your images really stand out, consider using the zoom function of your flash. Increasing the “mm” focal length of your flash to beyond what your lens is set to, will create a natural vignette around your subject. 📸Flash doesn’t have to be scary. And it definitely doesn’t have to be harsh. Most people struggle with flash because they try to overpower the room and their flash power instead of working with their ISO. Here’s the combo we keep coming back to: • Flash power around 1/16 • Zoomed light (105mm) • Slight forward tilt • ISO up (around 800) That’s it. Soft. Controlled. Cinematic fill light that still feels like the moment yet adds incredible quality with soft lighting. If flash has been sitting in your bag collecting dust….this is your sign ✨ Save this for later + try it at your next shoot.🪩🧚🏼✨ As always, we are happy to answer anything in the comments below!! I hope this is the year you master your flash!! #flashphotos #weddingphotographer #flashphotography #photographertips #weddingeducation

If your flash photos are boring, it’s probably not your flash.📸 It’s your shutter speed!! Slowing your shutter and dragging your camera when you create a photo lets ambient light and motion live in the frame while flash locks in your subject. That’s the power of shutter drag.💥 Same flash.
