‘On-camera flash’ lighting isn’t new—it’s just surged in popularity over the last couple of years across fashion, advertising, and weddings. However, rechargeable on-camera flash units mounted directly to your camera’s hot shoe don’t provide the optimal position or quality of light. By taking the flash off the hot shoe and using a transmitter to trigger it, you can reposition the flash right next to the lens, minimizing shadows and creating a punchier, flatter light quality. #photography #oncameraflash #flashphotography #photographyeducation

3 tips when using a speedlite flash in photography 👇🏼 — Know your look. Before using a speedlite, ask yourself if it suits the style you’re going for. Direct flash creates a harsh, edgy, paparazzi vibe, great for moody images. But if you’re aiming for something softer and cleaner, consider natural light or bounce the flash to avoid harsh shadows. — Bounce your flash. While we love the rawness of direct flash, bouncing it off a white wall or ceiling softens the light and reduces shadows. It’s a quick way to get a more balanced, minimal look without losing punch. — Use the sun + flash combo. Position your subject with the sun behind them and use your speedlite as a fill. This creates a dreamy, glowing effect, backlight from the sun, front exposure filled in by the flash. Super dynamic. — Do you have any tips for using a speedlite? — #flashphotographer #flashaddicted #flashphotography #editorialphotography #alcoholphotography #foodphotography #godox #canon #productphotography #flashphotoshoot #speedlite #photographytips

When photographers ask me about flash for weddings and/or events, I always recommend the Godox V1 because of its light quality, fast recycle time, overall performance, and it’s durability. You can purchase it easily in my Amazon store. Link 🔗 in my bio! There are flashes from other brands that are more expensive, are also good options, but if we’re talking quality and affordability, in my opinion, it’s hard to argue against the Godox V1. . #godoxv1 @godox_global @godoxusa @godoxphoto I highly recommend purchasing the accessory kit with the diffuser dome. It’s a game changer and helps to soften the light well! #trustyourdopeness ✌🏾 . . #camera #flashphotography #photographer #lightroom #editing #offcameraflash #photography #weddingphotographer #cameraflash #chicagoweddingphotographer #photographytips #cameragear #presets #photographyeducation #godoxflash #photographytips #flashphotography #mackjulion #chicagophotographer

Flash doesn't have to be scary (or harsh! 📸) If you’ve ever avoided using flash because you’re afraid of that direct "deer in the headlights" look, bounce flash is about to be your new best friend. It’s the easiest way to get soft, professional lighting in dark indoor spaces like wedding receptions! Here’s the breakdown: 1️⃣ Set flash to Manual: Start at 1/16 power. For a dark rooms with no windows or at night, set ISO to 1600. I usually use a shutter speed of 1/125 with aperture of f3.2 for most wedding receptions (15~20ft ceilings). For rooms with lower ceilings (less than 12ft) start with lower ISO like 800. 2️⃣ Aim the flash head: Aim at a white ceiling or wall and NEVER directly at your subject. 3️⃣ Take a test photo and dial in your exposure: • Too dark? Don't touch the flash. Bumping the power could effect the flash's recycle time. Instead, increase ISO gradually until you have your desired exposure level keeping in mind that our goal is to keep ISO as low was possible. • Still dark? Lower your aperture! • Too bright? Drop your flash power and/or ISO. • What about shutter speed? Flash lasts thousands of a second. By changing SS from 1/200 to 1/100, youre not affecting the flash's strength per se but you are introducing more ambient light to your image by lowering shutter speed so your flash is competing more with the ambient light. I normally keep my shutter to 1/125 when shooting indoors because background lightbulbs can look weird or half lit if the SS is too high so I'll leave it alone and adjust my other exposure settings around this. 4️⃣ Let physics do the work! 💡 By bouncing the light, you’re turning a tiny bulb into a massive, soft light source by using the wall or ceiling as a reflective diffuser! The more distance, the larger the light, and with a bigger light, means softer lighting. However, if the ceiling is too high, isnt a whitish color, or the subject is too far, bounce flash might not be as ideal. Bouncing light doesnt really offer much control in terms of shaping the light but works fantastic as a quick and easy soft fill light! #photographytips #flashphotography #weddingphotographer #learnphotography #photographyhacks

I like direct flash in the daytime when it’s used intentionally, especially when I want a more styled and editorial look, but I’m curious - how many of you feel the same way? Or do you just think of the old style, big lightbox kind of daytime flash photos that used to grace senior photos on railroad tracks? Cause I can still picture those too…. 😂
