Let’s talk about on-camera flash techniques on Day-7 of 100 Days of Photography with Neeta Shankar! Firing an on-camera flash aimed directly at your subject leads to flat lighting. Instead try this: Bouncing your Flash at the ceiling creates softer, more natural lighting. Think of ceilings as your portable softbox! By bouncing flash, you are increasing the size of your light source from a small flash head to a big ceiling thus creating softer light. But bouncing the flash directly upwards may cause shadows on the eyes if your subject has deep set eyes. So I prefer to tilt and swivel back to a 45 degree angle as the 45° bounce creates great lighting most often! You can also try bouncing to the side wall to create directional yet soft light if you have a white wall close by. Tip: White walls or ceilings = perfect bounce surface Warning: Colored walls/ceilings can affect white balance! In which case, you would be better off with an off camera flash! Want to see examples?
