A symbolic mystery… Freshly arrived from our conservators today is a late 17th century portrait by Irish artist Garret Morphy. Discoloured varnish disguised not only the exquisite features and skin tone of the boy, but also what now appears to be a blue tit in his hand (old fashioned name being titmouse). Coud this be some coded message to do with the unknown child’s identification? #GarretMorphy

To protect fragile textiles, conservators often stitch a translucent fabric over the object that supports threads and guards against abrasions. These overlays can also provide color to otherwise faded objects. Our textile fellow Maeve and objects fellow Daisy are hand painting an overlay for a painted silk Civil War flag from the Civil War Museum of Philadelphia, housed at @gettysburgnps.
