Writing advice: Writing tips for new writers 👉 Save for later! . Read intentionally. When you read a paragraph of a novel that makes you tense or delighted or fearful, question why. Think about the word choice, the sentence structure, the pacing, and everything that came in the scene before it. See how you can use these techniques in your own writing. . Practice writing short stories sometimes, even if your end goal is to write a novel. As Ray Bradbury said: “Write a short story every week. It’s not possible to write 52 bad short stories in a row.” . Write primarily for yourself, especially if writing is a hobby. There’s always going to be someone who hates something. You can’t please everyone! Writers benefit from a thick skin. If you see a tweet about how your favourite trope is cliche or weird, you don’t need to cut it out of your book. There’s a market for everything, and if you write something you genuinely love, it’ll find its audience. . Try finding a writing community. There’s a link to a free writing club discord in my bio under “free resources”. Sometimes a second opinion helps a lot! . You can break as many “rules” as you like. There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to writing. If a piece of advice doesn’t suit you, there’s no need to follow it. Your writing is uniquely yours, and that means you have the freedom to break as many “rules” as you want. . 👉 Save for later 💬 Tell us your favourite writing tips in the comments 🔍 Get resources and freebies in the link in my bio . Writing tip: Helpful Apps For Writers 👉 Save for later! . While you don’t need anything more than a pen and paper to be a writer, apps can help you to organise your ideas, get started with your novel, or stay on track. . MILANOTE | @milanoteapp Milanote is a tool for organising your creative projects. They have a desktop and mobile app, which are a great way to keep track of all the info you need about your world, characters, and plot. This is a great one if you’re quite visual and tend to save a lot of inspo on Pinterest, or if you miss the old days of using Polyvore collections to inspire your stories. . NOTION | @notionhq I’ve been going on about Notion for 500 years. I use it to organise my thoughts, track my progress, and see if I’m on target with my wordcount. You can find the writing template shown in the reel in my bio. This app is extremely customisable, and (somehow???) free. . WAVEMAKER | wavemaker.co.uk It’s like Scrivener but free. As it’s free, it does of course lack some of Scrivener’s features, but it provides a focused writing environment, autosync, writing cards, timelines, space for writing notes, and all sorts of good stuff. . OBSIDIAN | obsidian.md Obsidian is a really flexible way to store your information. If your story has a lot of content to remember (worldbuilding, family trees, complex interconnected plot threads, etc.) and you found that Notion wasn’t for you, this might be up your alley. It follows more of a graph-like structure, where all of your notes are interconnected. It’s also free for personal use. . A lot of authors avoid marketing until their book is finished. They think: “I’ll start posting once I have something to promote.” But that actually makes marketing way harder later. Because author content happens in two stages. ✨ Stage 1: Sharing When your book isn’t out yet, your content isn’t about selling. It’s about letting readers get to know you and the stories you love to tell. You can post about: • the story you’re writing • character inspiration • tropes in your genre • your writing routine • books you love that are similar to what you write You’re building connection. You’re finding readers who love the same kinds of stories you do. ✨ Stage 2: Marketing Once your book gets closer to release, your content naturally shifts to things like: • teaser quotes • character introductions • cover reveals • ARC teams • release countdowns This is when selling becomes part of the conversation. But if you’ve spent the early stage sharing your writing journey and interacting with readers… the marketing stage feels way more natural. Because now you’re not showing up out of nowhere asking people to buy a book. You’re inviting readers who’ve been following the journey to celebrate the release with you. And that’s the kind of marketing that actually works. If you want help turning those readers into email subscribers and future buyers, I created a guide that walks authors through how to build their first author funnel. Comment FUNNEL and I’ll send it to you. ✨
